The Wilder Institute Calgary Zoo has launched its latest attraction, the Asian Highlands exhibit, which opened to the public on Wednesday morning. This new addition allows visitors to observe a variety of remarkable species, including snow leopards, Sichuan takins, and the much-loved red pandas. This initiative marks the first phase of a larger expansion plan for the zoo’s Imagine Asia area.

Celebrating Biodiversity

Kyle Burks, CEO of the Wilder Institute, emphasised the significance of the Himalayan habitats, describing them as both remote and vital for global biodiversity. “The animals that live there are incredibly adapted to these high-mountain cold environments,” Burks noted. He expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to bring these species to Calgary, highlighting the zoo’s role in raising awareness about conservation issues affecting these animals.

The snow leopards and red pandas are familiar faces at the zoo, having resided there previously. During the construction of the Asian Highlands exhibit, the snow leopards were temporarily relocated to another zoo, while the red pandas found a temporary home within the Calgary Zoo itself.

Enhanced Habitats for Unique Wildlife

The new exhibit features expansive habitats designed to provide animals with greater choice and control over their environments. Burks stated, “These new habitats are more expansive—they’re designed to give the animals more choice, more control of their environments.” For the Sichuan takins, a species resembling a unique goat-antelope, the zoo has crafted habitats that closely replicate the high-altitude slopes typical of their natural habitat in central and western China.

Having moved into their new environments just days prior to the public opening, the animals have been given time to acclimatise before visitors were allowed to enter the viewing areas.

Future Plans for Imagine Asia

The Asian Highlands exhibit is the first of three planned expansions within the Imagine Asia area, with two additional exhibits set to be introduced by 2029, coinciding with the zoo’s centenary celebrations. When pressed for details about the species slated for these future exhibits, Burks playfully remarked, “I hate to be cagey about it, but got to save some secrets.”

The excitement surrounding the new exhibit aligns with the zoo’s ongoing commitment to conservation and education, providing a platform for the community to engage with wildlife from distant parts of the globe.

Why it Matters

The opening of the Asian Highlands exhibit is more than just a new attraction; it underscores Calgary Zoo’s dedication to biodiversity and conservation. By showcasing these unique species, the zoo not only enhances its educational offerings but also fosters a greater understanding and appreciation for the delicate ecosystems of the Himalayas. As environmental challenges continue to mount, initiatives like this are crucial in raising awareness and inspiring action for species preservation.
