Calgary, renowned for its stunning proximity to the Rocky Mountains and expansive prairies, is not just a picturesque city; it is also the focal point of a significant scientific initiative aimed at understanding the hailstorms that ravage Alberta. With a population exceeding 1.6 million, Calgary’s unique geographic features create an environment conducive to severe weather phenomena, positioning the city as a vital research location in Canada’s “hailstorm alley.”

The Science Behind Hailstorms

Julian Brimelow, the director of the Northern Hail Project at the Canadian Severe Storms Laboratory in London, Ontario, emphasizes that the interplay between the mountains and local meteorological conditions is crucial. “The mountains help to lift moist air, creating updrafts that fuel thunderstorms. When combined with strong winds, these elements can organise into hail-producing storms,” Brimelow explained during a recent outreach event at Telus Spark in Calgary.

The term “hailstorm alley” refers to a region stretching from High River to Rocky Mountain House and northward to Red Deer, where some of Canada’s most destructive hailstorms occur. A notable example is the catastrophic storm on August 5, 2024, which inflicted over $2.8 billion in damages, marking it as the second most expensive natural disaster in Canadian history.

Engaging the Community in Hail Research

At Telus Spark, Brimelow and his team showcased their innovative research methods to the public, aiming to demystify the science of hail. They introduced various pieces of equipment, including the Hail Swath vehicle, designed to intercept storms and collect hail samples. “In our first four years, we aimed to gather hail data after the storms had passed, which posed challenges due to lightning and adverse weather conditions,” Brimelow noted.

This year marks a shift in strategy, as the team is deploying advanced instrumentation such as portable weather stations, high-speed cameras, and hail catchers that immediately freeze collected samples. By moving proactively into the paths of storms, they hope to enhance their data collection efforts and improve understanding of hail dynamics.

Improving Weather Predictions

Brimelow highlighted a significant challenge in current weather forecasting: while radar technology can detect the presence of hail, it struggles to accurately measure hail sizes and quantities. The Northern Hail Project aims to bridge this gap. To date, they have conducted damage assessments on approximately 35 storms, analysing what materials withstand hail and under what conditions.

“For example, we discovered that wind-driven hail significantly exacerbates damage. When the hail reaches sizes comparable to walnuts or golf balls, strong winds amplify the destruction,” Brimelow stated. This critical data could inform the development of materials and structures that better resist hail-related damage, ultimately reducing future losses for Calgary and surrounding communities.

As the project progresses, the team remains committed to enhancing public awareness and preparedness for hailstorms. The insights gained from their research could lead to improved building codes and resilience strategies, potentially safeguarding lives and property.
