As the UK swelters under a persistent heatwave, many regions are on the verge of experiencing nearly two weeks of soaring temperatures. Southern England, in particular, has reported an unbroken streak of 13 days exceeding the established heatwave threshold, with Merryfield in Somerset recording a scorching 30.6°C (87.1°F) on Thursday. This marks an impressive 12 consecutive days of temperatures at or above 30°C, the longest such duration since 2006.

Extended Heatwave Conditions

Locations like Bournemouth and Heathrow have witnessed temperatures remaining above 26°C and 28°C respectively for almost two weeks. Although some respite in the form of cooler air is expected to move in from the north this weekend, certain areas may continue to bask in heatwave conditions for a few more days. However, breaking the 1976 UK record of 16 consecutive days at or above 30°C appears increasingly unlikely.

The current heatwave stands out not just for its duration, but also for the factors that have contributed to its intensity. Climate change is a significant player, with average temperatures in the UK now 1.33°C higher than they were from 1961 to 1990. Notably, the hottest days have warmed at a staggering rate of 4.5°C in Greater London, according to the Met Office.

This marks the third heatwave of the year, with 12 days surpassing 30°C in July alone—outpacing last year’s record of four consecutive days. While regions in Scotland and Northern Ireland have experienced heatwave conditions, the intensity and duration have not matched those seen in England and Wales.

While rainfall deficits have affected much of Wales and Northern Ireland, parts of western Scotland have seen wetter conditions. Thankfully, the UK as a whole is not currently facing a drought crisis, unlike the severe dry conditions that characterised 1976.

The intensity of this year’s heat has been remarkable, with six days exceeding 35°C, and the country has now recorded temperatures above that threshold for three consecutive months—an unprecedented occurrence. This increasing frequency and severity of heatwaves have led the Met Office to declare that such phenomena are becoming “more frequent, long-lasting, and intense.” Their latest report indicates that the number of days exceeding 30°C has quadrupled in areas like Greater London.

The Heatwave’s End: What Lies Ahead

A shift in wind direction this weekend is expected to bring a slight reduction in temperatures for many areas, particularly in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the northeast of England, where cloud cover will increase. Much of England and Wales, however, will continue to enjoy sunny, warm conditions with temperatures hovering between 24°C and 27°C, and even reaching 28°C or 29°C in some southern locales. It is likely that a few regions will maintain heatwave criteria throughout the weekend.

Looking further ahead, the forecast for the remainder of July suggests that high pressure will continue to dominate, leading to predominantly dry and warm weather. While temperatures will remain above average, they are not predicted to reach the extremes of recent days. As we move into August, weather models hint at a return to more variable conditions, although temperatures are expected to remain elevated.
