California Prepares for a Shark-Inspired Summer: Experts Urge Calm Amid Rising Great White Numbers

As summer approaches, California is bracing for an unprecedented influx of juvenile great white sharks, with experts predicting it could be the most shark-rich season in a decade. While beachgoers may be concerned about sharing the waves with these apex predators, researchers assure that humans are not on the menu. The young sharks, drawn northward by warmer waters as a result of a robust El Niño, are expected to thrive along the coastline while posing little threat to swimmers and surfers.

A Surge of Juvenile Sharks

In recent weeks, sightings of juvenile great white sharks have surged off the coast of La Jolla, California. These young sharks, measuring between 6 and 9 feet, are migrating from their warmer habitats in Mexico. As they settle into the nutrient-rich waters of the Californian coastline, they are not only feeding on local fish and rays but also establishing nursery areas crucial for their growth and development.

Dr Chris Lowe, director of the Shark Lab at California State University Long Beach, has dedicated over two decades to studying these magnificent creatures. His extensive research indicates that the last time El Niño conditions were similarly strong, in 2015, there were double the usual sightings of white sharks. This pattern suggests that the current summer could witness a similar phenomenon, leading to the establishment of new shark nurseries along the coastline.

Understanding Shark Behaviour

Despite the fearsome reputation of great white sharks, experts like Dr Lowe emphasize that humans are not regarded as prey. “Humans don’t look like prey, they don’t sound like prey,” he explains. “If it doesn’t feel like prey to a white shark, they simply ignore it.” His research has shown that sharks can differentiate between various sounds in their environment, and they are far less interested in the noises made by surfers and swimmers than they are in the sounds of potential prey.

In a recent study, Dr Lowe’s team recorded the underwater sounds produced by different ocean users and played these back to sharks in their natural habitat. While sharks showed a mild curiosity towards the sounds of swimmers, they would often investigate before turning away, indicating they do not perceive humans as food. This distinction is crucial in mitigating fears surrounding shark encounters.

Rarity of Shark Incidents

Historical data from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife reveals that shark incidents are exceedingly rare. Since 1950, there have been only 250 reported shark interactions, resulting in a mere 17 fatalities. This averages out to approximately 2.5 fatal bites per decade—a statistic that underscores the improbability of serious incidents occurring, even during peak shark season.

Comparatively, regions such as Florida, known as the shark bite capital of the world, experience significantly more incidents due to the prevalence of different shark species. Gavin Naylor, director of the Florida Program for Shark Research, notes that the species of sharks present in a given area plays a critical role in the frequency of shark bites. For instance, the blacktip sharks common in Florida are far more aggressive than the younger great whites typically found off California’s coast.

A Shift in Perception

Dr Lowe’s approach to shark safety has evolved over the years. Two decades ago, he would have advised caution around any shark larger than a human. However, the wealth of data collected through drone monitoring and behavioural studies has transformed his perspective. “I swim with these white sharks every day and I have no qualms doing it because of the data that we collected,” he asserts. This evolution reflects a growing understanding of shark behaviour and their interactions with humans, reinforcing the idea that we are not on their menu.
