UK Faces Prolonged Heatwave with Record-Breaking Temperatures

As the UK swelters under an extended heatwave, many regions are nearing two weeks of unrelenting high temperatures. Southern parts of England are witnessing a remarkable 13 consecutive days of heatwave conditions, with Merryfield in Somerset recording a peak of 30.6°C (87.1°F) on Thursday. This marks the longest stretch of days at or above 30°C since 2006, with Bournemouth and Heathrow also experiencing temperatures above 26°C and 28°C, respectively. Although slightly cooler air is expected to drift in from the north this weekend, several locations may still experience a few more days of intense heat.

Understanding the Heatwave Phenomenon

So, what has caused this prolonged bout of heat? Several intertwining factors are at play. First and foremost, the UK is experiencing significant climate change, with average temperatures now 1.33°C higher than those recorded from 1961 to 1990. More troubling is the fact that the hottest days are warming at an alarming rate—3 times faster than the overall average, with Greater London seeing an increase of 4.5°C, according to the Met Office.

This summer’s weather patterns have also been particularly favourable for prolonged heat. The jet stream has shifted considerably northward, allowing high pressure to dominate and warm air to flow in from the south. This stationary high-pressure system has formed what meteorologists refer to as a “heat dome,” where descending air compresses and heats as it approaches the ground. This phenomenon not only raises temperatures but also inhibits cloud formation, resulting in uninterrupted sunshine that further elevates ground temperatures.

A Record-Breaking Summer

2026 is already proving to be an extraordinary year for weather in the UK, with both May and June smashing monthly temperature records by more than two degrees. This current heatwave is the third to strike this year, and while last July also recorded multiple days above 30°C, the current July has seen an impressive 12 days hitting or exceeding this threshold. The heat has even spread to parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland, albeit with less intensity and duration.

Comparisons are being drawn to the legendary heatwave of 1976, which still holds the record for the longest continuous heatwave in the UK. While that summer remains unmatched in duration, this year has produced higher extreme temperatures and a greater number of “very hot days.” Notably, some southern regions, such as Wisley in Surrey, have reported no rainfall for a staggering 30 days, leading to significant dryness. In contrast, while most of Wales and Northern Ireland are facing rainfall deficits, parts of western Scotland are experiencing wetter-than-average conditions. Fortunately, unlike the widespread drought of 1976, no current area in the UK is facing drought conditions.

The intensity of this year’s heat is also noteworthy. For the first time, the UK has recorded six days exceeding 35°C, with temperatures of 35°C occurring in three consecutive months: May, June, and July.

The Future of Heatwaves in the UK

The Met Office has warned that heatwaves are becoming increasingly common, longer-lasting, and more intense. Their latest State of the UK Climate report notes that the number of days reaching over 30°C has quadrupled in areas like Greater London. Alarmingly, these heatwaves are also occurring outside of the traditional summer months. For instance, in September 2023, an unusual autumn heatwave brought seven straight days of temperatures exceeding 30°C.

The first significant heat event of 2026 occurred in late May, setting a record for the highest daytime temperature for that month. The heatwave also registered the UK’s first tropical night of the year, with an overnight minimum of 21.4°C.

What Lies Ahead

As the weekend approaches, a shift in wind patterns is expected to bring a slight reduction in temperatures for many areas. Scotland, Northern Ireland, and parts of northeast England will likely see increased cloud cover and temperatures dipping into the low 20s. Meanwhile, much of England and Wales will enjoy sunny, dry conditions, with temperatures remaining pleasantly warm at 24 to 27°C. Some southern locales may still flirt with temperatures around 28 or 29°C, keeping them within heatwave criteria.

Looking ahead, the long-range forecast suggests that high pressure will continue to dominate, maintaining dry and warm conditions, albeit not as extreme as in recent days. There is a possibility of light showers towards the end of July, particularly in the north. As we transition into August, forecasts indicate a potential return to more variable weather, although temperatures are still expected to remain above average.
