Skyroot Aerospace Launches Vikram-1, Pioneering India’s Private Space Sector

In a landmark event for India’s burgeoning private space industry, Skyroot Aerospace successfully executed its inaugural orbital launch of the Vikram-1 rocket on Saturday. This significant achievement positions Skyroot as the first Indian private firm to reach orbit, making India the third nation globally, following the United States and China, to have a private entity capable of such feats. The launch took place at the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) facility in Sriharikota, marking a new chapter in the nation’s space ambitions.

A New Era for Space Access

Lift-off occurred at 12:05 IST (06:35 GMT), with the Vikram-1 rocket ascending into low Earth orbit, approximately 450 kilometres above the Earth’s surface, within a swift 16-minute trajectory. With this launch, Skyroot aims to revolutionise satellite deployment by offering a service akin to hailing a taxi, allowing clients to book tailored missions for their payloads rather than enduring lengthy waits for shared launches on larger rockets.

Pawan Kumar Chandana, co-founder and CEO of Skyroot, articulated the vision behind their operations: “Access to space remains a major bottleneck,” he stated. “Satellite operators often find themselves in long queues, waiting months or even years for a launch opportunity. Our goal is to eliminate that delay by providing dedicated missions for smaller payloads.”

Innovative Payloads and Symbolic Tributes

The Vikram-1 rocket is engineered to carry payloads of up to 350 kilograms. Among its inaugural payloads are cutting-edge scientific instruments, including a robotic arm for space debris removal and an Earth observation camera. Notably, the payload also features two symbolic items that have garnered significant attention within India: a lotus crafted from lab-grown diamonds and a minuscule gold rocket adorned with micro-sculptures of three prominent Indian scientists—Nobel laureate CV Raman, former President APJ Abdul Kalam, and Vikram Sarabhai, the father of India’s space programme.

Chandana explained the intention behind these artistic tributes: “We exist because of the Indian space programme. This is our way of paying homage to the visionaries who laid the groundwork for India’s space exploration.”

The Road Ahead for Skyroot

This launch is the first of two planned test flights for Skyroot before they embark on commercial operations next year. With a production capacity of one rocket per month from their facility in Hyderabad, the company is well-positioned to meet increasing demand. Since its inception in 2018, following Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka’s departure from ISRO, Skyroot has become a leader in India’s private space sector.

The Indian government has actively encouraged private investment in space since opening the sector to private companies in 2020. This move aims to increase India’s share of the global space market from its current 2% to 10% by 2030. As of now, the nation is witnessing a surge in space start-ups, with over 400 firms established, yet Skyroot stands out as the sole unicorn in this innovative landscape.

Future Goals and Implications

Skyroot’s developments come amid heightened global interest in India’s space capabilities, evidenced by ISRO’s recent accomplishments in lunar and Martian exploration. Looking ahead, India plans to send its first astronauts into space in 2024, launch an orbiter to Venus by 2028, and establish a domestic space station by 2035. Chandana noted that while Skyroot will cater primarily to global markets—projecting that 70-80% of their business will come from international clients—there remains significant potential to support ISRO’s own missions.

“Satellites are integral to numerous sectors, including agriculture, disaster management, communication, and national security,” he added. “Thus, the economic opportunity is immense.”
