Parul Koul, a Google software engineer and president of the Alphabet Workers Union, stood outside Google’s Mountain View headquarters on Thursday, emphasising the paradox of massive profits juxtaposed with employee insecurity. “Make no mistake: this is a company that is enjoying massive, unprecedented success,” Koul stated. With a staggering valuation of $4 trillion—quadrupling over the past six years—she articulated that the recent layoffs are not merely tough decisions but reflections of prioritising profits over the very people who contribute to the company’s success.
The petition outlines essential requests, including guaranteed severance, the option for voluntary buyouts before mandatory layoffs, and the possibility to convert severance into extended paid leave. Additionally, workers are advocating for an end to performance ratings that they argue are based on numerical quotas rather than actual merit. As Koul noted, this petition represents the most substantial employee feedback on job security that Google has received to date.
A Tricky Landscape for Tech Workers
The atmosphere surrounding the petition delivery was tense, as workers faced closed doors and no immediate response from management. After leaving the petition with an office staff member—who assured them it would reach Pichai—Koul remarked on the urgency and importance of their demands.
