A recent survey has revealed that a significant portion of Canadians are apprehensive about the potential consequences of artificial intelligence (AI) data centres on their electricity bills and the environment. The Leger poll, conducted from July 10 to July 13, found that 81 per cent of respondents fear these facilities could lead to increased household energy costs. Additionally, 79 per cent expressed worries regarding the environmental toll associated with the energy and water consumption of data centres, alongside their contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.
Public Sentiment on Data Centres
When asked about data sovereignty, a nuanced opinion emerged. While nearly half of the respondents (46 per cent) supported the establishment of data centres to bolster Canadian AI services, 37 per cent disagreed, indicating a divided viewpoint on this issue. Andrew Enns, Leger’s executive vice-president for Central Canada, noted the mixed feelings across the nation regarding the construction of data centres.
The poll also gauged public opinion on the potential for AI data centres in respondents’ own provinces. A narrow majority—44 per cent—indicated support for such developments, while 42 per cent voiced opposition. This hesitancy may stem from concerns about the broader implications of these facilities, particularly as discussions around energy consumption and environmental sustainability grow increasingly urgent.
Awareness and Electricity Supply Preferences
The survey further highlighted that awareness of data centres among Canadians is quite high, with 62 per cent of respondents claiming familiarity with the concept. When it comes to the supply of electricity for these centres, the sentiment is clear: 58 per cent believe that provincial governments or electricity providers should be responsible for powering AI data centres. However, there is also a significant portion—approximately one third—who argue that these companies should only receive public electricity if they cover the full costs, including infrastructure needs. Meanwhile, 31 per cent maintained that data centre operators should independently meet their energy requirements without relying on public resources.
Growing Opposition and Future Plans
With plans to significantly expand data centre capacities across Canada, Alberta is poised to host the majority of this growth. These centres may rely heavily on energy sourced from natural gas plants rather than tapping into the existing electrical grid. This shift raises questions about the sustainability of energy sources and the long-term environmental implications.
Public opposition to the establishment of data centres has surfaced nationwide, including notable resistance in Alberta. Additionally, in June, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew dismissed proposals for a large data centre in the vicinity of Winnipeg, reflecting ongoing concerns about the ecological and economic impacts of such developments.
