Canadians Express Concerns Over AI Data Centres’ Environmental Impact and Electricity Costs

A recent survey reveals significant apprehension among Canadians regarding the environmental and financial implications of artificial intelligence (AI) data centres. According to a Leger poll, a striking 81 per cent of respondents are worried that these facilities will drive up household electricity expenses, while 79 per cent express concern about their detrimental effects on the environment, including high energy consumption, water usage, and greenhouse gas emissions.

Divided Opinions on Data Sovereignty

The poll also explored Canadians’ views on data sovereignty and the potential construction of data centres to support homegrown AI initiatives. While nearly half (46 per cent) of participants believe establishing such centres would enhance Canada’s control over its data, 37 per cent view it unfavourably. This division highlights a nuanced perspective on the balance between technological advancement and environmental stewardship.

Andrew Enns, Leger’s executive vice-president for Central Canada, noted the diverse opinions across the nation. “We’re seeing evidence that there is a bit of a divided opinion amongst Canadians regarding the construction of these data centres around the country,” he remarked, underscoring the complexity of public sentiment on this issue.

Local Support and Opposition

When asked about the prospect of AI data centres being built in their own provinces, 44 per cent of respondents indicated support, while 42 per cent opposed the idea. This close split suggests that, while there is some enthusiasm for technological development, many Canadians remain cautious about the local impacts of such projects.

The online survey, which included 1,505 participants and was conducted between July 10 and July 13, found a relatively high level of awareness about data centres, with 62 per cent of Canadians indicating they had heard of them. However, the Canadian Research Insights Council cautions that online surveys do not provide a margin of error due to their non-random sampling methods.

Power Supply Concerns

Another critical aspect of the poll focused on electricity supply for AI data centres. A majority of respondents (58 per cent) believe that provincial governments or electricity providers should be responsible for supplying power to these facilities. In contrast, nearly a third argued that power should only be provided if data centre companies cover the full costs of electricity and any necessary infrastructure. Meanwhile, 31 per cent insisted that these companies should not rely on public electricity and should independently meet their energy demands.

Plans for significant expansion of data centre capacity in Canada are underway, particularly in Alberta, where proposed facilities may source their energy from natural gas plants rather than the public electrical grid. This development has sparked public opposition across various provinces, including Alberta, where concerns have already led to rejections of large-scale projects, such as the recent dismissal of a substantial data centre proposal by Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew.

As Canada positions itself at the forefront of AI innovation, the tension between technological growth and environmental responsibility becomes increasingly palpable.
