A recent poll reveals significant apprehension among Canadians regarding the establishment of artificial intelligence (AI) data centres, with many fearing potential increases in their electricity bills and adverse environmental effects. The Leger survey found that 81% of participants are worried about the financial burden of these facilities on household energy costs, while 79% expressed concerns about their environmental footprint, including high energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Public Opinion Divided on Data Centres
The poll, which surveyed 1,505 Canadians from July 10 to July 13, indicates a complex landscape of opinions regarding the construction of data centres to support Canadian AI services. Approximately 46% of respondents believe that building these facilities is beneficial for enhancing Canada’s control over its data, while 37% disagree, viewing it as a negative development.
Andrew Enns, Leger’s executive vice-president for Central Canada, highlighted the mixed sentiments among Canadians. “We’re seeing evidence that there is a bit of a divided opinion amongst Canadians regarding the construction of these data centres around the country,” he stated.
When asked specifically about data centres being built in their own provinces, respondents were nearly split. While 44% expressed support for local developments, 42% opposed the idea, illustrating the nuanced nature of public sentiment on this issue.
Awareness and Perception of Data Centres
The survey also revealed a relatively high level of awareness regarding data centres, with 62% of Canadians stating they had heard of such facilities. This awareness likely contributes to the concerns surrounding their environmental and economic impacts.
When it comes to energy supply for these centres, the majority of respondents—58%—believe that provincial governments or electricity providers should supply power to AI data centres. In contrast, just under a third suggested that such support should only be extended if the companies involved cover the full costs of energy and necessary infrastructure. Notably, 31% of respondents asserted that data centre companies should not have access to public electricity and should independently manage their energy needs.
Expanding Capacity Amidst Opposition
Plans to significantly expand data centre capacity in Canada are underway, predominantly in Alberta. Here, these centres may rely on power from natural gas plants rather than the conventional electrical grid. This development has sparked growing public opposition across the nation, including in Alberta, where resistance to proposed data centres is gaining momentum. In June, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew notably halted plans for a substantial data centre in the province, reflecting the rising concerns about the environmental and economic ramifications of such projects.
