Chief Wes Sam of the Ts’il Kaz Koh First Nation expressed a cautious curiosity about nuclear technology, stating, “Is it the right thing? I don’t know, I’m trying to determine that. I’m not for or against, but I like to educate myself and so does my community.” He emphasised the importance of considering all possible options for energy production, particularly as B.C. seeks to meet its future demands sustainably.

Sam noted, “While infrastructure co-ownership is already a well-established model for our Nations across LNG plants, port infrastructure and gas facilities, introducing advanced nuclear power… represents a completely new frontier for British Columbia.”

At present, the B.C. government has no immediate plans to integrate nuclear power into its energy strategy. Officials have highlighted the success of recent power calls that have drawn thousands of megawatts of proposals, predominantly from renewable sources, many of which are Indigenous-led initiatives. This shift towards renewables reflects a broader trend where wind, solar, and battery technologies are emerging as the most cost-effective forms of electricity generation.
Tim Weis, senior director of the Industrial Decarbonization group at the Pembina Institute, reinforced this perspective, stating, “I think the evidence on that is pretty clear that renewables are lower cost than anything else right now… they’re basically outcompeting almost everything.” His remarks suggest that while nuclear energy may offer potential benefits, the current economic landscape favours renewables.
