A new wave of apprenticeships is emerging in the UK, blending traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology. Among those at the forefront is Ollie Priestley, who is honing his skills as a heritage vehicle technician at the specialist restoration firm Tolman. This unique programme highlights a significant shift in vocational training, where the fusion of age-old techniques and modern digital tools is creating a new breed of skilled workers capable of working on the modern classics that define car culture today.

Heritage Meets Modern Technology

At just 29, Priestley is not taking the conventional route in his mechanical apprenticeship. Instead, he is immersing himself in the world of heritage vehicles, where the restoration of classic cars requires a nuanced understanding of both traditional mechanics and the latest technological advancements. His training at Tolman encompasses a variety of skills, from computer-aided design (CAD) to 3D printing, enabling him to fabricate components that breathe new life into vintage machines.

“I wanted to develop the skills that allowed me to work on the cars that I love, like the Peugeot 205 GTi,” he explains. “Getting to know how to make things keeps me focused and engaged. I recently fabricated a gearbox mount for a classic BMW. It’s gratifying to know that my creations will help restore these vehicles.”

Chris Tolman, the founder of the eponymous restoration business, emphasises that the training Priestley is receiving differentiates him from apprentices in mainstream dealerships, where digital tools often reduce technicians to mere parts changers. “In our field, technicians must identify and comprehend issues before creatively resolving them,” Tolman says, highlighting the increasing complexity of automotive restoration.

The Evolution of Apprenticeships

The evolution of apprenticeships in the UK is becoming increasingly pronounced against a backdrop of digitalisation in the workplace. Priestley’s three-year programme, which began in 2018, is part of the Heritage Skills Academy (HSA) initiative that aims to integrate modern technologies with foundational skills like welding and glazing. With an equivalence to three A-levels, this level three apprenticeship is a significant upgrade from the previous classic vehicle framework.

John Pitchforth, managing director of the HSA, describes the programme as “radically improved,” merging contemporary technological advancements with essential engineering principles. Recent government data corroborates this trend, indicating a nearly 25% decline in the number of individuals commencing level two intermediate apprenticeships, while higher-level apprenticeships (levels four to seven) have gained traction.

However, as the curriculum becomes more tech-focused, there are concerns regarding the potential overshadowing of hands-on skills by software proficiency. Pitchforth counters this apprehension, asserting that HSA apprentices emerge with superior skill sets compared to their peers in other programmes. “When modern engineers transition to our sector, they often lack the core engineering principles necessary to diagnose and repair vehicle systems without computer assistance,” he argues.

The Balance Between Tradition and Innovation

In Sheffield, the landscape of traditional manufacturing is equally evolving. Chris Iveson, CEO of FourJaw Manufacturing Analytics, notes that modern apprentices are increasingly acquiring practical skills alongside digital proficiencies. “The modern apprentice is learning to create while also mastering the technology that informs production processes,” he explains. This dual focus includes skills such as CNC programming, CAD, and robotics, which are becoming standard in engineering and manufacturing apprenticeships.

Yet, Iveson cautions against overly narrow training that neglects the essential understanding of materials and processes. “If training becomes too focused on specific technologies, apprentices may lose sight of foundational knowledge that is crucial for their craft,” he warns.

Just a stone’s throw from FourJaw, Ernest Wright, a scissor manufacturer with a storied history dating back to 1902, is embracing modern techniques without sacrificing traditional craftsmanship. The firm has partnered with the University of Sheffield to utilise 3D metal printing, streamlining product development while maintaining its artisanal roots. “We can create prototypes swiftly and cost-effectively, allowing us to innovate rapidly without risking our established methods,” says Paul Jacobs, who acquired the company in 2018.

For Elliott Nurcombe, a part-time apprentice at Ernest Wright, the integration of modern technology enhances his trade experience. “Many parts for our machines are no longer available, but with CAD and 3D printing, we can replicate them,” he shares. “However, I believe that technology won’t overshadow the manual skills we rely on here.”

The Challenge of Recruitment

Despite the technological advancements in apprenticeships, attracting the next generation of craftsmen remains a challenge. Julie Topham, business development manager at Platts & Nisbett, a maker of surgical instruments, observes that the allure of high-tech roles often overshadows traditional trades. “There will always be a pool of candidates eager to work with technology, but finding individuals who enjoy hands-on craftsmanship is becoming increasingly difficult,” she laments.

This sentiment underscores a broader issue: as industries evolve, so too do the interests and aspirations of young workers. The challenge lies in striking a balance between embracing modern technology and preserving the invaluable skills that have been honed over generations.
