UK Government Backs Vertical Aerospace’s Ambitious Flying Taxi Plans with £10 Million Grant

In a significant boost to the UK’s burgeoning aerospace sector, Vertical Aerospace has successfully showcased its Valo electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft during a public demonstration at the Farnborough International Airshow. The event marks a crucial milestone as the company transitions from traditional flight to vertical descent, and it coincides with the announcement of a £10 million grant from the government, bringing total investment in the project to £48 million.

A Leap Towards Urban Air Mobility

The Farnborough International Airshow served as the perfect backdrop for Vertical Aerospace’s groundbreaking demonstration. The Valo prototype smoothly transitioned from conventional flight, utilising its aeroplane wings, to hovering gracefully—akin to a helicopter—before landing. This critical transition is a key feature of eVTOL aircraft, which aim to redefine urban transport by offering quieter, emission-free flights in densely populated areas.

However, the road to commercialisation is fraught with challenges. The eVTOL sector has seen many hopeful companies struggle post-pandemic, with several faltering after a burst investment bubble. Vertical Aerospace itself faced a financial crisis in 2024, leading to founder Stephen Fitzpatrick’s departure. The company was subsequently acquired by US distressed debt investor Jason Mudrick, enabling it to rebound and strive towards gaining certification from the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Competing on a Global Stage

Vertical Aerospace is not alone in this race. Rival Joby Aviation has already made strides with public tests in the US, while other competitors such as Eve, Archer Aviation, and various Chinese firms are also vying for a slice of the market. The competition is fierce, but Vertical’s recent demonstration positions it as a serious contender.

Stuart Simpson, the CEO of Vertical Aerospace, expressed optimism about the future, stating, “We’re really confident” about meeting the new timeline for certification. The company is aiming for passenger flights by 2029, although it initially targeted a 2025 launch. The collaboration with regulatory bodies has been fruitful, with both the CAA and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) aligning on a shared goal for 2028.

Military Interest and Hybrid Innovations

Notably, the UK government has shown interest in a military variant of the Valo aircraft, signalling potential dual-use applications. Simpson revealed the hybrid model’s advantages, stating that it could accommodate both civilian and military needs. “Silent takeoff and landing, with a low noise and heat signature, make it really interesting for defence applications,” he commented.

Vertical Aerospace is not just focused on its electric model. The company is also exploring a hybrid system that incorporates a gas turbine, which, while producing emissions, could extend the aircraft’s range and reduce refuelling time compared to traditional battery recharging.

Looking Ahead: Production Plans

With government backing solidified, Vertical Aerospace is preparing to finalise UK sites for its aircraft and battery facilities. The company’s current facility in Kemble, Gloucestershire, is set to produce around 150 aircraft annually, with aspirations to scale up to 1,000 per year at a larger site. The aim is to streamline the certification process while boosting local manufacturing capabilities.

Pricing is another critical aspect. Vertical aims to position its flights competitively, with costs expected to be on par with traditional taxi fares. This pricing model hinges on the efficiency of the aircraft, which could complete multiple trips in the time it takes a cab to make a single journey from Heathrow to central London.
