Construction has officially kicked off on the much-anticipated Enbridge Sunrise pipeline expansion, located close to Prince George, British Columbia. The federal government, represented by Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson, announced the start of this substantial $4 billion project, which follows just three months after its approval by Canadian authorities. The Sunrise Expansion entails the development of 139 kilometres of new pipeline, alongside 11 looping segments, extending from Chetwynd to the border with the United States. Enbridge, in partnership with 38 First Nations, will oversee the project, which is designed to enhance the existing West Coast natural gas pipeline.
“This is a 42-inch pipe; it’s as large as they build, and it will connect northern B.C., which is rich in natural gas resources, to the southern regions where consumption is highest,” explained Stewart Muir from Resource Works. The construction will yield approximately 2,500 new jobs across British Columbia, with around 1,300 of those opportunities arising in the local area, providing a significant boost to the regional economy.

This announcement comes on the heels of Canfor’s decision to close the Northwood pulp mill in Prince George, leading to the loss of 300 jobs.
