Alberta Faces Smoke Invasion as Wildfires Rage in Northwest Territories

Alberta is enduring a tumultuous summer, with rapid weather fluctuations typical of the province’s reputation. However, the situation has taken a turn for the worse as wildfire smoke from the Northwest Territories has crept into Alberta, significantly degrading air quality. With 202 active fires in the N.W.T. burning across an area exceeding 777,000 hectares, Edmontonians now find themselves grappling with the consequences of this environmental crisis.

An Unprecedented Fire Season

As of Monday afternoon, 195 of the 202 fires in the Northwest Territories were reported to be out of control, exacerbated by hot, dry, and windy conditions. The most significant blaze, located near Fort Simpson, has been raging since June 26 and has grown to a staggering 55,403 hectares. These conditions have prompted Environment Canada to issue an air quality advisory for all areas of Alberta north of Red Deer, warning residents that air quality can fluctuate dramatically over short distances.

In Edmonton, the air quality health index (AQHI) surged to 10+ on Monday, indicating a very high risk level, which could persist through Tuesday. The AQHI is a crucial gauge of pollution levels, with ratings above 10 signalling severe health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations.

Health Risks on the Rise

Environment Canada has urged individuals, especially those in high-risk categories—such as seniors, pregnant women, infants, and those with pre-existing health conditions—to limit outdoor activities during these poor air quality conditions. Those working outdoors are particularly vulnerable and should seek medical attention if they experience symptoms like coughing or sore throat.

To mitigate the impact, residents are advised to keep their windows and doors shut and utilise high-quality air filters in their ventilation systems or certified portable air cleaners. In light of extreme heat coupled with compromised air quality, Environment Canada emphasises the importance of staying cool.

The potential health effects of prolonged exposure to wildfire smoke cannot be overstated. Poor air quality is linked to various adverse health outcomes, including respiratory diseases and cardiovascular issues. Even before the air reaches hazardous levels, fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from wildfires poses serious health risks, penetrating deep into lung tissue and potentially entering the bloodstream.

Long-Term Consequences of Smoke Exposure

While the immediate dangers of wildfire smoke are apparent, the long-term health implications are equally concerning. Research indicates that children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic health conditions can experience adverse effects from smoke exposure at much lower levels than the general population. The biological vulnerabilities of children, including their smaller respiratory systems and faster breathing rates, exacerbate these risks and may lead to developmental issues or increased asthma rates over time.

Studies have shown that hospital visits for respiratory ailments spike during periods of heavy smoke, with conditions like viral infections and pneumonia becoming more prevalent among affected populations. Symptoms such as itchy eyes, nasal congestion, and headaches are common indicators that individuals are reacting to smoke particles.

The Role of Climate Change

While wildfires are a natural aspect of the boreal forest ecosystem, climate change, driven largely by fossil fuel consumption, is making these events more frequent and intense. Scientific studies have documented a marked increase in wildfire size and intensity over recent decades, with a corresponding rise in air pollution levels attributable to these fires.

A 2024 study highlighted that smoke-related deaths tied to climate change have surged since the 1960s, estimating around 12,566 annual fatalities in the 2010s linked to this phenomenon. The study indicates that approximately 13 per cent of excess deaths from wildfires during this period were attributable to climate change, up from just 1.2 per cent in the 1960s.

In response to the escalating health risks associated with declining air quality, Environment Canada has updated its colour-coded AQHI to enhance public understanding of health risks linked to air pollution, particularly following a record number of AQHI 10+ ratings during the recent wildfire season.
