In a significant crackdown on illegal activities, Quebec provincial police revealed the dismantling of a Montreal laboratory engaged in the production of counterfeit passports, birth certificates, driver’s licences, and other essential documents. This operation, executed on July 8, involved collaboration from both the Montreal and Gatineau police forces, as well as experts from Quebec’s Forensic Science and Legal Medicine Laboratory, according to an official news release.

The police operation led to the seizure of over 250 items essential for the fabrication of counterfeit documents. Among the confiscated materials were passport covers, bank card templates, laminators, and printers. Additionally, authorities seized three vehicles linked to the operation.
Captain Marie-Hélène Poulin, who heads the Economic Crimes and Cybercrime Investigation unit within the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), indicated that the laboratory was capable of producing a broad spectrum of counterfeit documents. These included complete passports for several countries such as Canada, France, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Italy, as well as driver’s licences for various Canadian provinces including Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Alberta, and Saskatchewan, alongside Florida’s identification. The scope of the operation also extended to firearms acquisition permits and Quebec health insurance cards.

During the operation, one individual was apprehended and subsequently released on bail. He now faces multiple charges, including forgery, possession or trafficking of counterfeit documents, and laundering proceeds of crime. Authorities are also working on recovering substantial sums of money believed to be linked to the operation from a related bank account.
