Toronto’s recent hosting of the FIFA World Cup showcased the potential of public transport when it is prioritised effectively. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) provided city councillors with insights on Wednesday, revealing how the tournament not only enhanced rider satisfaction but also improved the overall efficiency of transit services. With a remarkable 92 per cent satisfaction rate among users on key routes, the TTC is now eager to apply the knowledge gained to future events across the city.
A Successful Transit Strategy
During the World Cup, the TTC implemented strategies that garnered substantial praise, as highlighted by Mandeep Lali, the TTC’s Chief Executive Officer, who stepped into the role last autumn. This was echoed by Josh Colle, the organisation’s Chief Strategy and Customer Experience Officer, who noted the overwhelmingly positive media coverage and rapid incident response times that contributed to the success of the event.
The TTC facilitated seamless transport for fans attending six matches at BMO Field, which was temporarily renamed Toronto Stadium for the occasion. The commission reported a staggering 42 per cent increase in ridership on five major routes compared to the same period last year, with 1.14 million trips taken across the King, Dufferin, Bathurst, Ossington, and Harbourfront corridors.
Adapting to Challenges
As the tournament progressed, the TTC faced various challenges that required quick thinking and adaptation. Cameron Penman, head of Wheel-Trans, the TTC’s service for individuals with disabilities, observed that many visitors were unfamiliar with the TTC’s branding and signage. To address this, the TTC promptly introduced new wayfinding signs and stationed staff at key locations to assist passengers.
By the second match day, it became evident that bottlenecks were forming at Presto pay stations outside the stadium. The TTC swiftly responded by deploying additional personnel equipped with handheld fare payment scanners, thus expediting the process for exiting fans.
Enhancements in Transit Efficiency
Fortunato Monaco, interim Chief Operating Officer, pointed out that the express corridors introduced as part of the city’s RapidTO transit improvement initiative significantly reduced travel times. However, Monaco emphasised that the success was not solely due to these dedicated corridors. Adjustments to pedestrian signals near the Fleet Street Hub also played a crucial role, cutting the wait time from 80 seconds to 40. This simple operational change alleviated congestion and improved the flow of streetcars.
Mina Papic, the TTC’s Manager of Climate and Resilience, highlighted the challenges posed during the final match, where extreme heat added stress to the electrical infrastructure. The TTC monitored conditions closely, reducing service on certain lines to mitigate the risk of overheating and potential service disruptions.
Innovations for Future Events
The TTC’s proactive measures during the World Cup have laid a foundation for future improvements. Customer feedback revealed a positive reception to several innovations, including updated information displays at bus stops and enhanced wayfinding systems. Colle expressed hope that these upgrades would become standard features for TTC riders in the future.
In the coming months, the TTC will conduct a comprehensive analysis of data collected during the tournament and plans to present a detailed report to the TTC Board in early 2027. This reflection will help inform strategies for upcoming events, including the Toronto Caribbean Carnival and the Canadian National Exhibition.
