Oil prices soared to their highest levels in over a month on Thursday, continuing a five-day upward trend. This surge follows claims from Yemen’s Houthi rebels that they targeted two Saudi oil tankers, amplifying concerns about potential disruptions to global oil supplies that could extend beyond the already tense Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude futures climbed by US$4.52, or 4.80 per cent, reaching US$98.59, the highest since June 3. Similarly, U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude rose by US$3.39, or 3.90 per cent, settling at US$90.22, marking its peak since June 11.

Market Reactions to Supply Fears

The immediate market sentiment surrounding crude oil has turned increasingly bullish as traders factor in the heightened potential for supply interruptions. Ahmad Assiri, a research strategist at Pepperstone, commented, “The immediate outlook for crude oil remains supportive as markets price a worrying probability of supply interruptions in a second chokepoint.” In addition to the ongoing conflicts surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, the Houthis have escalated their actions by targeting vessels in the Bab el-Mandeb strait, aiming to impose a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia.

Recent shipping data indicates that two Chinese supertankers, transporting a combined 4 million barrels of Saudi oil, are navigating out of the Red Sea via the Bab el-Mandeb strait. This occurs amidst reports of a Saudi vessel being attacked in the same vicinity, further intensifying fears over the safety of oil transport in critical maritime routes.

Implications of Regional Conflicts

The geopolitical landscape is becoming increasingly complex, with Iran’s Revolutionary Guards asserting control over the Strait of Hormuz. They reported that an oil tanker caught fire following an explosion while attempting to navigate a route laden with mines near Oman’s coast. The Guards have declared the strait “completely closed” to vessels not coordinating with Iran, signalling a tightening grip on this vital shipping lane.

In tandem, the U.S. military has intensified its operations in the region, completing a twelfth consecutive night of attacks on Iranian targets. The tension escalated further after U.S. President Donald Trump vowed to retaliate against Iranian aggression by targeting critical infrastructure whenever Iranian forces attack vessels in the Strait.

Future Price Predictions

Goldman Sachs has projected that oil prices are likely to sustain much of their recent gains through July and August. This outlook is attributed to declining global inventories, reduced production from the Middle East, increased seasonal travel demand, and a notable decrease in the release of strategic petroleum reserves. The financial institution noted that oil flows through the Bab el-Mandeb strait have averaged nearly 9 million barrels per day over the past month, with approximately 4 million barrels potentially facing rerouting challenges due to the blockade of multiple chokepoints.

In addition, European diesel margins reached record levels, peaking at US$66.25 a barrel on July 17, driven by Russia’s ban on diesel exports following repeated Ukrainian attacks on its refineries. Diesel prices continued to remain high, trading as high as US$65.30 a barrel on Thursday.

Why it Matters

The ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are not merely a regional concern; they pose significant ramifications for global oil markets and economic stability. As prices rise, the potential for inflation increases, affecting consumers and industries reliant on stable energy costs. The situation demands close attention as the interdependence of global oil supply chains becomes increasingly evident, and any disruption could have far-reaching effects, influencing everything from transport costs to consumer prices worldwide.
