The investigation into Ahmad Hassan Hajahmad, 33, began with a police raid on a Toronto residence in March last year, during which several electronic devices were confiscated. According to the police, evidence has emerged suggesting that Hajahmad may have links to Hamas, a group designated as terrorist by various governments, and that he acted in a manner that purportedly supported its objectives.
Hajahmad was apprehended on Tuesday and charged with participating in or contributing to the activities of a terrorist organisation. However, due to a publication ban, police have refrained from disclosing further specifics regarding the alleged incidents.

In response to the charges, Hajahmad’s lawyer, Mohamed El Rashidy, has asserted his client’s innocence, insisting that Hajahmad has no affiliations with Hamas or any other foreign entity. “He faces a single charge arising from speaking at public demonstrations. No violence, no weapon, no one harmed,” El Rashidy stated, highlighting that expressing outrage over civilian casualties should fall under the protection of free speech rather than being categorised as terrorism.
El Rashidy also pointed out that while police allege that Hajahmad advocated for violence, he has not been charged with any hate-related offences. He expressed confidence that the basis for the case against his client would not withstand legal scrutiny.
