To stay informed, Goodeve relies heavily on updates from the BC Wildfire Service. “This is becoming a new reality for communities across Canada,” he remarked. “The kids are affected by the unpredictability, so it’s vital to ensure they feel safe and kept in the loop.”
Wildfire Conditions Worsen
The situation escalated on Wednesday, as gusty winds and soaring temperatures exacerbated fire behaviour and smoke production in the area. Ashes began to fall in Kimberley, leading to growing anxiety among residents. “People felt a sense of unease,” Goodeve recounted, reflecting on the discomfort and uncertainty that enveloped the community.
Paula Walbauer, the regional fire information officer, warned that fire activity could intensify if storms bring additional lightning without any subsequent rainfall. Mayor Roland Stanke expressed concern over the fire’s proximity to the village’s watershed, a critical water supply already under strain. “If it gets into the watershed, we could be in serious trouble,” he warned.
