Tech Titans’ Orbital Datacentres Face Backlash Over Environmental Risks

In a bold move that could reshape space technology, Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin are pushing the envelope with plans for orbital datacentres. However, a coalition of experts and environmental advocates is sounding the alarm, warning that these ambitious plans may unleash devastating pollution levels that could irreversibly alter our planet’s atmosphere. A petition has now been filed, urging the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to halt new licensing for these projects until a thorough environmental review is conducted.

The Pollution Predicament

The proposed orbital datacentres, which would operate from space, are intended to support the burgeoning demand for data processing and storage. Yet, the environmental implications are severe. Experts warn that the emissions from rockets during launches and the subsequent re-entry of decommissioned satellites could release harmful pollutants, including black soot and rare metals, into the stratosphere. Such pollution threatens to jeopardise the ozone layer and may contribute to increased ultraviolet radiation exposure on Earth—a particularly alarming prospect amidst our ongoing climate crisis.

The petition, spearheaded by organisations such as Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (Peer), Earthjustice, and DarkSky International, highlights the urgent need for regulatory scrutiny. It calls for a suspension of new project licenses, arguing that current plans violate federal law and lack adequate environmental impact assessments.

Unprecedented Growth and Its Consequences

The satellite industry has experienced explosive growth, with numbers soaring from approximately 1,400 active satellites in 2015 to around 15,000 today. Projections suggest that this could balloon to 100,000 within the next decade, not counting the proposed datacentre networks. This surge is largely driven by the extensive satellite constellations from Musk’s Starlink and Bezos’s Amazon, which aim to provide global broadband coverage.

However, as the number of satellites increases, so too does the potential for environmental degradation. According to Steve Volz, former head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite office, the prospect of millions of additional satellites poses significant risks. “Even if they burn up upon re-entry, we shouldn’t be polluting the atmosphere with debris any more than we would tolerate emissions from a smokestack,” Volz cautioned.

The Dark Side of Innovation

As these ambitious plans unfold, the repercussions extend beyond atmospheric pollution. Light pollution, exacerbated by the growing number of satellites, threatens ecosystems that rely on natural darkness, with advocates noting a decline in firefly populations and other insects. Ruskin Hartley, executive director of DarkSky International, emphasised, “These projects could permanently alter the night sky as we know it.”

Furthermore, the demand for rare metals and resources to build these satellites raises additional environmental concerns. Many of these materials are already scarce, and their extraction could lead to further ecological disruption on the ground.

Regulatory Oversight Needed

The petition to the FCC argues that the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) mandates an assessment of the environmental impacts of such projects. It insists that the FCC must evaluate whether the public interest would be served by granting these satellite operation applications.

Among the companies seeking permits is the Cowboy Space Corporation, founded by the billionaire co-CEO of Robinhood. Their plan includes launching a constellation of 20,000 satellites by 2028. Yet, their only mention of environmental mitigation appears to focus on minimising impacts on astronomical observations, without addressing broader ecological concerns.

Both SpaceX and Blue Origin have outlined grand visions for their orbital datacentres, claiming they will fortify humanity’s future among the stars. However, critics argue that their applications fail to adequately address the environmental ramifications of operating such vast networks of satellites.

As we stand on the brink of a new era in space technology, the environmental implications of these ambitious satellite projects cannot be overstated. The potential for catastrophic pollution not only poses a threat to the planet but also raises fundamental questions about our responsibility to safeguard the environment while pursuing innovation.
