Recent statistics from the Ministry of Health and Social Services reveal that 140 cases of cyclosporiasis were reported in Quebec from May 1 to July 21, 2023. This marks a notable increase from just 40 cases during the same period last year. The illness is caused by the cyclospora parasite, which is typically transmitted through contaminated food or water. Common symptoms include watery diarrhoea, abdominal bloating, gas, and appetite loss.
Dr. Vinh highlighted that while there are diagnostic tests available for cyclospora, specific treatments remain limited. “Unlike typical viral gastroenteritis, there isn’t a standard treatment for cyclospora,” he noted. However, he pointed out that proper hydration and certain antibiotics can help manage the infection and aid recovery.
Seasonal Trends and Travel Connections
Cases of cyclosporiasis tend to spike during the summer months, often linked to travel. This year, many of the reported infections in Quebec have been associated with trips to Mexico. A spokesperson for the provincial health ministry noted that increases in cases align with the rainy season in regions where the parasite is commonly found.
Despite the rising numbers, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) confirmed that no active outbreaks of the cyclospora parasite are currently being investigated in the country.

Between May 1 and July 24, the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 4,173 domestic cases of cyclosporiasis, with links found to iceberg lettuce in nine states. While a recall was initiated for iceberg lettuce sourced from Central Mexico, PHAC clarified that this outbreak does not affect Canada.
The lifecycle of the cyclospora parasite depends on environmental conditions, and with climate change potentially prolonging rainy seasons, the risk of increased cases could rise. Dr. Vinh observed a gradual uptick in cases over the years, culminating in this year’s significant spike. “It’s essential to remain cautious and informed; we may just be experiencing a particularly bad year,” he said.

For those concerned about contamination, he advised thorough washing of produce under running water. “If there is a recall, it’s best to dispose of the item. But if it’s not part of a recall, don’t shy away from your fruits and vegetables,” he urged.
