In a significant turn of events, American R&B sensation Chris Brown has entered a guilty plea for affray following a brutal incident at a London nightclub in February 2023. The assault, described by prosecutors as “vicious and unprovoked,” has cast a shadow over the artist’s career as he prepares for sentencing later this year.
The Incident at Tape Nightclub
The violent episode unfolded at Tape, an exclusive members-only club in Mayfair, in the early hours of 19 February 2023. According to police reports, Brown, along with his vocal coach, rapper Omololu Akinlolu, attacked the victim, music producer Abe Diaw, using a glass bottle as a weapon. CCTV footage captured Brown striking Diaw multiple times on the head, followed by Akinlolu joining in the assault as the victim attempted to escape.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) detailed how Brown and Akinlolu pursued Diaw, ultimately kicking him while he lay defenceless on the floor. Diaw sustained serious injuries and required hospital treatment for damage to his head and knees.
The Legal Proceedings
Initially, Brown faced more severe charges, including assault and possessing an offensive weapon, but these were dropped as part of the plea agreement. Both he and Akinlolu pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of affray, which involves using or threatening violence that instils fear for personal safety. This charge carries a potential sentence of up to three years in prison.
Detective Constable Zara Ripamonti from the Metropolitan Police condemned the attack, emphasising the unacceptability of such violence in London. “This was a disgraceful, unprovoked assault that put a man in hospital,” she stated, expressing satisfaction that both men acknowledged the criminal nature of their actions.
The court hearing at Southwark Crown Court was brief, lasting less than five minutes, with Judge Tony Baumgartner setting the date for sentencing on 26 October. Brown’s bail conditions permit him to leave the UK, but he must return for the hearing, having previously paid a £5 million security fee as part of his release.
