A chilling trend has emerged in the online gaming world, as predatory networks known as Com groups are ensnaring vulnerable girls on platforms like Roblox, Discord, and Telegram. These sinister networks, comprising sadistic teenage boys, are exploiting their victims to engage in horrific acts, raising alarms among law enforcement and child protection agencies across the globe. The National Crime Agency (NCA) has labelled these groups a “deeply concerning” threat, highlighting a staggering increase in reported abuses.
Grooming and Exploitation: A Disturbing Trend
In a heart-wrenching case, Elijah Palmer targeted a young girl named Ania* through the gaming platform Roblox. Initially posing as a friendly acquaintance, Palmer successfully lured her to Discord, where he subjected her to a series of coercive and traumatic demands. These included blackmailing her into self-harming and producing explicit images, all while threatening her and her family with violence. Palmer’s heinous actions culminated in a four-year and nine-month prison sentence after he pleaded guilty to multiple offences, including encouraging serious self-harm and creating indecent photographs of children at Sheffield Crown Court last month.
Palmer’s case is not an isolated incident. The NCA has identified a worrying surge in similar cases, with reports of abuse linked to Com networks skyrocketing by an alarming 2,900 per cent since 2022. The agency is currently investigating around 200 ongoing cases, indicating the scale of the threat these groups pose to children.
The Nature of Com Networks
Com networks, characterised by their extreme and often sadistic demands, deliberately target girls aged as young as 11, often luring them from online spaces that cater to vulnerable individuals, such as forums supporting those with eating disorders or self-harm issues. Members of these groups commonly coerce their victims into self-abuse or other acts of harm, which are then shared within the network for the purposes of notoriety and validation.
Rob Richardson, the NCA’s threat lead for Com networks, expressed concerns about the unique challenges posed by these groups. He noted that the members are often socially isolated young men who become entrenched in harmful online environments, frequently exposed to extreme content that fosters a sense of grievance and nihilism. “This is a new breed of online threat,” Richardson stated. “These are children drawn into harmful spaces, causing significant harm to others.”
Social Media’s Role in the Crisis
Platforms like Discord and Telegram have come under scrutiny for their role in facilitating these grooming networks. Notably, both platforms are currently excluded from the UK government’s proposed ban on social media access for users under 16, as they are classified as messaging apps rather than traditional social media. This regulatory gap allows these predatory groups to operate with relative impunity.
Despite the government’s assertion that the social media ban is just one element of a broader strategy to safeguard children, the reality remains that many of the platforms young people frequent are not subject to stringent oversight. Furthermore, many gaming applications are recognised as pathways that lead boys into these disturbing networks, as they often serve as gateways to other social platforms.
The Response from Authorities and Parents
Palmer’s conviction is part of a growing push to bring justice to victims of Com networks. In 2025, another member of the same group, Cameron Finnigan, was sentenced to six years for similar offences, including encouraging suicide. As the NCA continues to investigate these alarming trends, Richardson advocates for greater parental engagement and awareness concerning children’s online interactions.
He emphasises the importance of having open and non-judgemental conversations with children about their digital lives. “Kids are far more cyber-literate than their parents, which can be daunting,” he noted. Encouraging parents to take an active interest in their children’s online activities and to utilise parental controls can help mitigate risks.
The Responsibility of Tech Companies
Richardson has also called upon tech companies to take more responsibility for the content their algorithms promote. He pointed out that harmful material is often readily accessible on the clear web, making it easier for young users to stumble upon extreme content. “Once you show an interest in this, the algorithms exacerbate the problem, feeding you more of the same,” he warned, urging for accountability and improvements in content moderation.
Both Telegram and Roblox have publicly denounced the activities associated with Com networks. Telegram stated that it consistently removes groups linked to these activities, while Roblox reiterated its commitment to ensuring a safe environment for its users, particularly younger ones.
Why it Matters
The emergence of Com networks highlights a disturbing intersection of technology, social isolation, and predatory behaviour that threatens the safety of children in digital spaces. As grooming tactics evolve and become more sophisticated, it is imperative for parents, educators, and law enforcement to remain vigilant and proactive. This situation demands a collective response to safeguard the most vulnerable members of our society from exploitation and harm. The responsibility lies not only with parents and guardians but also with technology companies and policymakers, who must collaborate to create safer online environments for all.
