In a groundbreaking initiative, Dr. Stephen Fai, director of the Carleton Immersive Media Studio at Carleton University in Ottawa, is unveiling an ambitious project aimed at creating a digital twin of Canada. This innovative platform will serve as a comprehensive repository of data related to buildings, communities, and landscapes, allowing users to visualise and manipulate real-world information in a virtual environment. As the project transitions from concept to execution, it promises to revolutionise how we engage with the built environment.

A Vision for the Future

Dr. Fai’s vision for a digital Canada is not merely about replicating the physical realm online; it’s about enriching it. By providing a platform that integrates a wide variety of data—ranging from environmental metrics to census information—users can not only track existing structures but also experiment with future developments. “This platform can include representations of buildings and roads, but it can also gather data from sensors, images from cameras, and more,” Dr. Fai explained, emphasising the expansive potential of the project.

This month marks a significant milestone as Dr. Fai and his team have released the underlying computer code for the platform, inviting users to engage with this pioneering resource. To facilitate its adoption, they have established Collab Digital Twins, a not-for-profit organisation that acts as the entry point for interested parties. “What we’re anticipating is that some groups who are more tech-savvy will download the application and start building on it,” Dr. Fai noted.

Embracing Digitalisation in the Built Environment

The development of digital twins—a concept first introduced by a NASA engineer in 2010—has been gaining momentum worldwide, particularly in the construction sector. The shift from paper blueprints to digital representations began in the 1980s, evolving into sophisticated “building information models” that encapsulate the intricate details of structures. The digital twin concept takes this a step further by creating a dynamic link between the physical and digital realms, allowing for real-time updates as buildings change and evolve.

Dr. Fai and his team have focused on creating an inclusive platform where both commercial and open-source tools can coexist. Unlike existing commercial digital twin platforms, which often impose prohibitive licensing fees, the Carleton initiative aims to be accessible to a wider audience, including small and medium enterprises, non-profit organisations, rural municipalities, and Indigenous communities. “Our goal is to create a common format where users can integrate their proprietary projects with public data associated with a given location,” Dr. Fai explained.

Real-World Applications and Challenges

As the platform develops, Carleton’s team has employed their university campus as a testing ground, demonstrating how this digital twin can facilitate real-time monitoring of various metrics, including energy consumption and occupancy levels. Users can log in to access essential data, enabling them to align their projects with existing municipal frameworks and regulations.

Lara Chow, associate director of the Carleton studio, highlighted that one of the key benefits of their platform is its sovereignty. “What makes us different is that we’re a fully sovereign solution,” she stated, reinforcing the importance of data security and local control.

However, the journey to widespread implementation is fraught with challenges. The construction sector has traditionally been resistant to digitalisation, often due to a lack of awareness about the data available for property optimisation. Dr. Fai’s collaboration with the National Research Council is vital in addressing these hurdles, as it aims to raise awareness and encourage the adoption of digital tools.

Looking Ahead: A Test with the Federal Government

A critical test of the platform’s efficacy will occur as it is deployed by the Department of National Defence, which will use it to manage approximately 22,000 non-classified built assets nationwide. John Hale, who leads digitalisation efforts within the department, acknowledged the platform’s potential, stating, “You need to do some foundational things, and I think the Carleton platform really enables that.”

Furthermore, the platform recently received international recognition from buildingSMART, marking a significant milestone as it became the first Canadian initiative to win an award from the global organisation promoting digital methods in the building sector.

As the Carleton team prepares to release a more accessible visual demonstration of their platform later this summer, they are eager to illustrate its myriad applications. “It’s not just putting code out there, it’s creating an ecosystem,” said Nicolas Arellano, president of Collab Digital Twins. The potential for this platform extends beyond traditional construction applications, attracting interest from diverse fields such as epidemiology, where it could model the spread of airborne infections through HVAC systems.
