This innovative venture, known as a “digital twin,” aims to serve as a comprehensive repository of data on buildings, communities, and landscapes, allowing for real-time updates that mirror changes in the physical world. The concept of a digital twin was first introduced by a NASA engineer in 2010, and it has since been adopted across various sectors, including architecture and urban planning. Dr. Fai’s vision is particularly ambitious; he seeks to create a virtual Canada that integrates public information with data relevant to new building projects or management plans.
This platform will feature a plethora of information streams, encompassing everything from environmental data and sensor readings to images and demographic statistics. According to Dr. Fai, “This can include representations of buildings and roads, but it can also incorporate data from sensors, images from cameras, environmental information, and census data – essentially any information that may be pertinent to the challenge at hand.”
A New Era of Collaboration
This month marks a significant milestone in the development of Dr. Fai’s vision, as his team has released the computer code that will enable users to engage with the platform. To facilitate its adoption, they have established a not-for-profit entity, Collab Digital Twins, which will serve as the gateway for prospective users.
Dr. Fai expressed optimism about the potential for collaboration, saying, “What we’re anticipating is that some groups who are more tech savvy will download the application and start building on it. Others may come to us and say, ‘Can you help us get this going?’”
This initiative reflects a broader international trend where data visualisation is becoming increasingly critical in the construction and building management sectors. The change from paper blueprints to digital representations has already transformed how architects and builders work, with modern software enabling 3D modelling and detailed building information models that encompass extensive data on a structure’s characteristics.
Bridging the Gap in Data Accessibility
One of the primary aims of the digital twin platform is to democratise access to vital information, particularly for smaller enterprises, non-profits, and Indigenous communities, which often struggle to afford the high costs associated with commercial digital twin tools. Dr. Fai noted, “Commercial digital twin platforms typically come with hefty licensing fees, leaving out the majority of the people who design, construct, own, and operate Canada’s built environment.”
By creating a shared platform where proprietary projects can be integrated with public data, the Carleton team hopes to empower a diverse array of stakeholders. For instance, an architect working in Sudbury could utilise the platform to access relevant zoning and demographic data for a project in Ottawa, thus enhancing collaboration across geographical boundaries.
During the platform’s development, the Carleton team used their university campus as a testing ground, demonstrating how the digital twin could facilitate monitoring of energy consumption, occupancy rates, and other critical metrics. This real-world application serves as a model for how similar tools can be leveraged to manage large public spaces effectively.
Future Applications and Potential
As the platform opens up for broader use, the Carleton team is eager to showcase its practical applications. The next significant test will involve collaboration with the federal government, where the Department of National Defence plans to employ the platform to manage approximately 22,000 non-classified assets across Canada. John Hale, who leads digitalisation efforts for the department, stated, “You need to do some foundational things, and I think the Carleton platform really enables that.”
Moreover, the platform’s potential reaches beyond traditional building management. Professionals in various fields, including epidemiology, are exploring its capability to model the spread of airborne infections through building ventilation systems.
Nicolas Arellano, president of Collab Digital Twins, emphasised the importance of creating an ecosystem around the platform. “It’s not just putting code out there; we have a roadmap and a vision to make this valuable for people,” he said. “But then this thing is going to evolve in ways that we have no way to predict, so that’s going to be interesting.”
