In a peculiar twist of fate, a Cayuga duck named Buddy has made himself comfortable at Lake Summerside in south Edmonton, despite being far from his natural habitat. Residing in the man-made lake for the past three months, Buddy’s cheerful disposition and apparent health have drawn attention, but concerns about his long-term well-being are mounting among local residents and wildlife experts.
Buddy’s Unexpected Arrival
Buddy’s journey to Lake Summerside began approximately three months ago, piquing the interest of residents in the area. Kim Livingston, the office manager at the Lake Summerside Residents Association, commented on Buddy’s condition, noting, “He seems pretty happy, he seems pretty healthy. He’s a big boy.” However, the joy of his presence took a troubling turn when Buddy became ensnared in a fishing lure, prompting concerns for his safety.
Livingston reached out to Wild North, a local wildlife rescue organisation, for assistance. “I called and asked if they would take him, as I was concerned about the hook in his bill,” she recalled. Unfortunately, the rescue team informed her that they could not help, as Buddy is a domestic duck, not a wild species.
The Nature of a Cayuga Duck
Buddy is recognised as a Cayuga duck, a breed developed in New York during the 19th century, stemming from a combination of wild black ducks, the Black East India, and Rouens. While this breed is known for its resilience in colder climates, Alberta’s harsh winters pose a significant challenge for Buddy, especially since he is unable to fly. “He can’t take off from here, so he’s stuck,” Livingston explained. “Not only will he not survive in the winter without shelter, I did read that even though he’s foraging in the lake, he’s not getting the proper nutrition.”
Despite being fed waterfowl pellets three times daily, this solution is only temporary. The community has rallied around Buddy, recognising the need for a more sustainable arrangement.
A New Home Beckons
Fortunately, a new owner has stepped forward who has other ducks and geese, providing a potential safe haven for Buddy. However, the challenge now lies in persuading him to leave his current abode. Livingston shared that attempts to catch Buddy have proven difficult. “We spent about two hours trying to catch him. He outsmarted us every time,” she laughed, acknowledging the duck’s evasive nature.
To aid in the effort, a professional bird catcher is scheduled to assist over the weekend in hopes of relocating Buddy before winter sets in. In the meantime, residents and visitors to Lake Summerside are encouraged to respect Buddy’s space as efforts continue to find him a new home.
