A relentless heatwave is set to engulf around 70 million residents across the southern and central regions of the United States, as the country braces for its third significant “heat dome” in a month. With temperatures soaring between 95°F to 105°F (35°C to 40°C), some areas could experience extremes of up to 120°F (48°C), raising urgent concerns over public health and safety.
A Heat Dome Takes Hold
The impending heatwave, which is expected to persist into next week, is caused by a high-pressure system known as a heat dome. This atmospheric phenomenon traps heat in a particular region, resulting in prolonged periods of excessive temperatures. The current heat dome stretches from the Gulf of Mexico coast, across the Great Plains, and into the Midwest, affecting a vast area and threatening to break historical temperature records.
This summer has already been exceptionally challenging, with a previous heat dome event in early July leading to the cancellation of various Independence Day festivities in the eastern states. Following that, another heatwave swept through the west, bringing record-breaking temperatures of 115°F (46°C) in Montana.
The Human Toll of Extreme Heat
The consequences of such extreme heat are dire, particularly for vulnerable populations. The National Weather Service has issued warnings of extreme heat for western Nebraska, where weekend temperatures are forecast to reach a sweltering 108°F (42°C). Heat-related illnesses are an ever-present danger, especially for the elderly, pregnant individuals, young children, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Heat is recognised as the deadliest weather phenomenon in the United States, and the current conditions—characterised by elevated nighttime temperatures and high humidity—offer little relief for those affected.
Global Context: A Warming World
While the United States grapples with this heatwave, Europe is not spared from the severe effects of climate change. Over 250,000 people have been forced to evacuate due to wildfires raging across Spain and France, exacerbated by similarly extreme heat conditions. A separate heatwave in June reportedly led to approximately 5,700 deaths in France alone.
The United Kingdom is also experiencing the repercussions of soaring temperatures, with dry conditions creating a high risk for wildfires. Currently, firefighters across the United States are battling 88 active wildfires, underscoring the urgent nature of the climate crisis.
Climate Change: A Dire Prognosis
Experts warn that the frequency and severity of such heatwaves are symptoms of a much larger issue driven by human activities. Andy Pershing, chief program officer at Climate Central, emphasised that these conditions reflect the predictions made by climate models in the 1990s, which anticipated more frequent and severe heatwaves, along with increased humidity and higher overnight temperatures. “We are experiencing exactly what the climate models said we should experience now,” he stated, underscoring the stark reality of our warming planet.
