Minister MacKinnon reiterated that the focus for the federal government would remain on safety enhancements already underway at the airport, which are slated for completion by mid-2027. “At this stage, I can confirm that our focus lies exclusively on the approved safety enhancements,” he stated. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, a long-time opponent of jet operations at the island airport, welcomed the federal decision, thanking Prime Minister Mark Carney and Minister MacKinnon for listening to community concerns. “Your relentless advocacy has made a difference,” she remarked on social media.
Chow further called for the province to return the land it had previously expropriated from Toronto for the airport expansion. “Together, we can continue working to build a waterfront for future generations, with new parks, housing and more,” she stated, emphasising the need for collaborative efforts to enhance local infrastructure.
The NDP’s Chris Glover, who represents the waterfront riding of Spadina-Fort York, also weighed in, declaring that the people of Toronto had sent a strong message to Premier Ford. “Doug Ford thought he could push through his ridiculous plans by overriding our democratic rights. He was mistaken,” he asserted, urging the province to repeal its controversial legislation that enabled the land takeover.
