As an intense heatwave takes hold of the United States, approximately 70 million individuals are bracing for dangerously high temperatures. This ongoing weather phenomenon, characterised as the third major “heat dome” of the month, is forecast to impact vast regions spanning from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Plains and Midwest.

A Heat Dome Unfolds

The current heatwave is expected to produce temperatures ranging from 95°F to 105°F (35°C to 40°C), with some areas in the southwestern United States potentially soaring to a staggering 120°F (48°C). The heat dome, a high-pressure system that traps warm air in place, is anticipated to linger over affected areas well into the following week, blocking any relief that might typically come from cooler weather patterns.

While heatwaves are a customary feature of American summers, the frequency and intensity of these events are escalating, a trend increasingly attributed to anthropogenic climate change. The impact of extreme heat is not confined to the United States. Europe is currently grappling with dangerously high temperatures and wildfires, with around 250,000 people evacuating their homes in Spain and France. A separate heatwave in June has been linked to an estimated 5,700 fatalities in France, underscoring the severe public health implications of such extreme weather.

The UK, too, is experiencing heightened fire risks due to prolonged dry spells, mirroring the conditions faced in the US. Across the nation, firefighting efforts are underway to combat approximately 88 active fires, a stark reminder of the growing challenges posed by climate change.

Andy Pershing, chief program officer at Climate Central, emphasises the alarming trends observed in recent years. “We are experiencing exactly what the climate models in the 1990s predicted we should be facing now,” he stated. “That is, more frequent and severe heatwaves, larger temperature anomalies, increased humidity, and higher overnight temperatures. These are all integral components of the climate narrative.”
