This initiative, driven by feedback from a staggering 55,000 girls and women, aims to foster self-expression, belonging, and confidence among its members. The updated uniforms, launched on Monday, signify a shift towards a more relaxed approach to attire, allowing members to wear just a top during meetings and activities—an option that many feel enhances their comfort and individual expression.
A Contemporary Take on Tradition
The new uniform range, developed in collaboration with Hemingway Design over the past two years, marries the organisation’s rich heritage with contemporary aesthetics. While maintaining elements of traditional brand recognition, the uniforms now feature modern design enhancements such as hidden pockets, thumb holes, and badge sashes that cleverly double as cross-body bags.
Felicity Oswald, the chief executive officer of Girlguiding, articulated the intent behind the redesign, emphasising the importance of self-expression in nurturing confidence. “The new range is all about providing girls with the freedom to express themselves while feeling part of our amazing organisation,” she stated. The introduction of these practical and stylish designs is anticipated to further bolster the confidence of girls involved in guiding, who are statistically shown to be 30% more confident than their peers.
Feedback-Driven Changes
A survey conducted in June with 2,000 girls aged six to 16 revealed compelling insights into their preferences regarding self-expression and clothing. An overwhelming 93% indicated that they feel their most comfortable when given the freedom to style themselves, with nearly half asserting that personal choice in attire directly correlates with their confidence levels. Additionally, 41% of respondents noted that strict school uniform policies hinder their ability to express themselves.
The new collection offers approximately 30 clothing items and 15 accessories, enabling members and volunteers to personalise their looks for various events. The initiative also includes a sustainable twist, allowing old uniforms to be reimagined into new accessories during workshops planned for the summer.

Prominent broadcaster and Girlguiding ambassador Angellica Bell praised the new uniforms, stating, “The new uniform gives girls and volunteers the freedom to style it the way that suits them… empowering girls and volunteers to embrace their individuality.” This sentiment echoes the organisation’s commitment to ensuring that all members feel represented and valued within the guiding community.
Historically, Girlguiding has seen nine redesigns throughout its 116-year existence. The original uniforms have evolved significantly, from the traditional blue skirt and stockings to the incorporation of casual T-shirts and shorts in 1980, reflecting the organisation’s adaptability to changing times and cultural contexts.
A Controversial Policy Shift

Following a decision made in March, the organisation will restrict membership to “girls and young women,” resulting in transgender girls being required to leave.
