Barry remarked, “We have minimal demographic information, but we can definitely see the shift to younger audiences.” The enthusiasm of Gen Z birders is evident on social media platforms, where their experiences are showcased, further normalising a hobby once perceived as niche.

The innovative spirit of the tech community has also sparked the creation of new apps that enhance the birdwatching experience. Sam Lewis, a software engineer from Stockport, was inspired by Merlin to develop his own bird identification app, Lifer. This platform gamifies the process of birdwatching by allowing users to collect virtual cards for the birds they identify, complete with hand-drawn illustrations by his partner, Emily.

“Lifer lets people collect virtual cards for their catches,” Sam explained, drawing parallels to popular gaming mechanics. “They are real-life Pokémon, really, if you think about it.” By integrating elements of rarity and scarcity—hallmarks of collectible games—Lifer aims to attract those who find joy in the hunt for elusive species. Sam is also mindful of conservation, implementing features that protect sensitive breeding sites by hiding their precise locations during critical periods.

Barry emphasised that the goal for Merlin is to remain user-friendly and encourage outdoor exploration. “We really want Merlin to be fun and easy to use, first and foremost, and have it be a place where you can jump in and think about your world of birds,” she stated.

Megan echoes this sentiment, noting that apps like Merlin have made birdwatching more accessible. “A lot of people out there bird using their ears or their eyes,” she explained. “You don’t need to use all of your senses while you’re birding, which is really amazing.”

The blend of technology and traditional birdwatching practices creates an inclusive environment that invites more people to explore the intricacies of avian life.
