Following the left fielder’s memorable hit against the San Francisco Giants on July 7, toy stores across Canada saw an unexpected surge in demand for the whimsical toy, selling out almost overnight.
A Sudden Surge in Popularity
Simply Wonderful Toys, a Guelph-based store, is one of many retailers that experienced the phenomenon first-hand. Keeley Cea, an assistant manager at the shop, reported that they were completely sold out by the morning after Clase’s home run. “We had no idea what was going on,” she admitted. “Then we saw the videos of the game and realised that it was the same dragon that we have been selling for years, so it was kind of a shock.”
This newfound fame of the dragon, which features a light-up flame and emits a mighty roar, has led to eager customers waiting for restocks. The store has already established a waitlist for the toy, with requests coming in from local baseball teams interested in celebrating their own home runs with the dragon.
The Quest for the Dragon
Adira Winegust, a dedicated Blue Jays fan from Kingston, Ontario, embarked on a hunt for the dragon shortly after seeing it in the game. “I thought, oh my god, I have to get this now,” she shared. Despite an initial disappointment at finding her local independent toy store sold out, a bit of detective work led her to a shop in Ottawa. A friend visiting the city kindly retrieved the $40 toy for her, concealing it from her children during the journey home. Since then, the dragon has become a cherished plaything in her household, particularly among her young children.
With online retailers running out of stock, some listings on resale sites have seen prices skyrocket to as much as £160. Toy Town in Toronto is one of the few shops still offering the dragon, but owner Shari Bricks noted that their supplies are dwindling rapidly. “It’s calmed down a little bit, but when people see them in the store, they’ll comment, and if they have a loved one that they know would love it, they’ll pick it up,” she explained.
The Origin of the Home Run Dragon
The stuffed dragon in question was reportedly sourced by the Blue Jays’ hitting coach David Popkins from Just For Fun, a toy store located conveniently close to the team’s hotel in San Francisco. Popkins purchased the toy as a symbol of fearlessness, which has resonated with fans and players alike.
Despite the team’s struggles in recent matches, the dragon has continued to capture the imagination of supporters. “The Blue Jays need all the help they can get,” Bricks commented. “The more dragons out there, maybe the better luck they will have.”
