Dr Anastasia Chalkidou, healthtech programme director at NICE, emphasised the importance of maximising the use of every donated lung, stating, “Every donated lung is a precious gift, and right now too many of them never reach a patient who needs them.” This sentiment resonates deeply with those awaiting transplants, many of whom have altered their daily lives to avoid exposure to infections, relying heavily on their families for support during this uncertain time.

NICE’s draft guidance proposes a four-year trial period for the new lung preservation technology, aimed at gathering comprehensive data on its efficacy and cost-effectiveness. This approach aligns with the NHS’s broader objectives to standardise access to advanced transplant technologies across the country, thereby ensuring that geographical disparities do not dictate the fate of patients in need of life-saving procedures.

Dr Chalkidou further noted, “We know that people waiting for a lung transplant face an incredibly difficult and uncertain time. That is why we believe it is right to make this technology available to NHS patients now, while we work to build the stronger evidence base that will help us fully understand its long-term benefits and value for money.”
