Water levels in Chestermere Lake, situated approximately 20 kilometres east of Calgary, are on the mend following a temporary cessation of water flow due to an oil spill. The incident, which raised environmental concerns, has prompted swift action from local authorities and the Western Irrigation District, who oversee the lake’s water management.

Incident Overview

Last Friday, the Western Irrigation District halted water flow into Chestermere Lake after an oil spill was detected upstream in southeast Calgary. This precautionary measure was implemented to safeguard the lake, which spans nearly three square kilometres and was originally constructed by the Canadian Pacific Railroad in the 1880s for agricultural purposes. The district is responsible for regulating the inflow and outflow of water to and from the lake, ensuring its ecological balance.

The Calgary Fire Department quickly responded to the situation, tracing the source of the spill to a large container at a commercial facility located on 78 Avenue Southeast. It was reported that the spill resulted from a failure of the storage tank, leading to an estimated 1,200 litres of motor and hydraulic oil entering the Western Headworks Canal, which connects the Bow River to Chestermere Lake.

Clean-Up Efforts

Upon investigation, responders observed oil floating atop the canal’s surface. In light of this, a vacuum truck was deployed to assist in the clean-up operation. Local residents noted a significant drop in the lake’s water level, which fell by nearly a metre during the cleanup process due to the suspension of inflow while allowing outflow to continue.

The provincial government has confirmed that the facility responsible for the spill is accountable for all cleanup expenses. Fortunately, the City of Chestermere announced via social media that, based on ongoing containment and cleanup efforts, it appears that the oil did not reach the lake itself.

Return to Normalcy

By Saturday afternoon, the canal system resumed its normal operations. The Irrigation District, which is spearheading the investigation into the spill, has indicated that water levels in Chestermere Lake are expected to normalise by Monday.
