Early Sugar Intake May Influence Dementia Risk, Study Reveals

A recent study suggests that limiting sugar consumption in children under the age of two could significantly reduce their risk of developing dementia later in life. Conducted by researchers from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the findings indicate that a decrease in sugar intake during these formative years may correlate with a 23 per cent reduction in dementia risk.

The Research Findings

The study, published in the journal *Neurology*, examined data from a substantial cohort of 64,737 individuals, focusing on those born before and after the sugar rationing period in the UK, which lasted from World War II until 1953. Participants were categorised based on their exposure to sugar rationing during critical developmental stages: before birth, during their first year, and up to two years old.

The results demonstrated that individuals who experienced sugar rationing both before birth and during their first year of life exhibited a 21 per cent lower risk of dementia compared to those born after sugar rationing. More strikingly, those who experienced rationing before birth and up to two years old had a 23 per cent lower risk. Furthermore, individuals with restricted sugar intake in early life were diagnosed with dementia an average of 2.6 years later than their peers.

Implications for Brain Health

Dr Jiazhen Zheng, the lead author of the study, remarked, “Our findings suggest that limiting sugar during the earliest stages of life may have lasting benefits for brain health.” This assertion highlights the potential importance of early nutrition in shaping long-term cognitive outcomes. The research suggests that the detrimental effects associated with high sugar intake—previously linked to conditions like type 2 diabetes—may extend beyond adulthood, impacting brain health from a very young age.

In a smaller subset of participants who underwent brain scans, those with lower sugar consumption in infancy displayed greater grey matter volume and reduced white matter hyperintensities. These indicators suggest less overall brain tissue damage, reinforcing the notion that early dietary choices can have profound implications for neurological health.

Cautions and Considerations

Despite the promising findings, experts caution against drawing definitive conclusions. Dr Sara Rodrigues, a senior research manager at Alzheimer’s Research UK, emphasised that while the study establishes a correlation between sugar intake and dementia risk, it is observational in nature. Such studies can identify relationships but cannot definitively prove causation. The Lancet Commission, which provides one of the most comprehensive reviews of dementia risk, does not currently regard sugar intake as a standalone risk factor, indicating the need for further research in this area.

Dr Rodrigues also underscored the importance of a balanced diet in supporting brain health. While the study’s findings are compelling, she advocates for a holistic approach to nutrition rather than focusing solely on sugar intake.

As the prevalence of dementia continues to rise—with approximately 982,000 individuals currently living with the condition in the UK—understanding the factors that may mitigate this risk is crucial. With more research needed to explore the relationship between early sugar consumption and long-term brain health, the findings serve as a pivotal starting point for both public health strategies and parental awareness.
