As Quebec braces for its upcoming provincial election campaign, set to officially launch in just weeks, the spotlight has turned to the Liberal Party and its leader, Charles Milliard. Breaking his silence on policy matters, Milliard recently presented his party’s economic roadmap, which emphasises enhancing Quebec’s position within Canada, forging new trade alliances, and adapting to shifts in the North American economic landscape. Speaking outside the U.S. Consulate in Quebec City, he stated, “We’re proposing something clear and pragmatic, which is to work for a stronger Quebec and a stronger Canada.”

Milliard’s Recent Momentum

Political analyst Karim Boulos noted that Milliard had initially invigorated the party’s prospects following his leadership victory in February, with the Liberals briefly appearing to eclipse the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ). “When he was announced, the number spiked. The Liberals looked great. They were in second place and they were outshining the CAQ,” Boulos observed. However, the momentum appears to have waned in recent months as Premier Christine Fréchette has distanced herself from the legacy of François Legault, which has allowed her to regain traction.

The Parti Québécois (PQ), on the other hand, has started to lose ground, creating a potential opportunity for the Liberals. Yet, according to Boulos, it was Fréchette who capitalised on this moment. “The PQ over the last few months has begun to lose some steam, so that created a window of opportunity that Mr. Milliard could have seized. However, it was Madame Fréchette who seized it,” he remarked.

Public Perception and Party Strategy

In the bustling streets of Montreal, there remains a level of unfamiliarity with Milliard among the electorate. A Global News survey revealed that many residents could not identify the Liberal leader or were unaware of his key priorities, although some expressed a desire for more information as the election draws closer.

Liberal Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Désirée McGraw reassured constituents that they would soon see more of Milliard and his strategic announcements. “I think you can expect to see a lot more of him and more announcements in terms of unveiling our platform at the appropriate time,” she said.

Boulos believes that Milliard’s recent economic message is a step in the right direction, potentially appealing to voters who favour increased collaboration between Quebec and the rest of Canada. Nevertheless, he cautions that a comprehensive platform addressing vital issues such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, investment, and technology is essential for Milliard to distinguish himself ahead of the October 5 election.

The Need for Stronger National Participation

For now, Milliard maintains that Quebec has been underplaying its role on the national stage. He argues that enhancing cooperation with the rest of Canada is crucial for amplifying Quebec’s economic influence. His proposed vision appears to resonate with the notion that greater integration can lead to mutual benefits for both Quebec and Canada.

In a political landscape where competition is fierce, the coming weeks will be pivotal for the Liberal leader. As he prepares to unveil more of his platform, voters will be watching closely to see if he can transform his economic vision into a compelling narrative that captures the hearts and minds of Quebecers.

Why it Matters

The upcoming provincial election is not merely a contest of political parties but a defining moment for Quebec’s future direction. As issues of national identity, economic collaboration, and regional influence come to the forefront, Milliard’s ability to effectively communicate his vision could reshape the political landscape. With the stakes high, the choices made by voters in Quebec will echo through the corridors of power in Ottawa, influencing not just provincial policies but the very fabric of Canadian unity.
