In a deeply troubling incident, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has revealed that the deaths of 15 elephants in the Amboseli region may be linked to cyanide poisoning from pesticides used in local agriculture. The alarming findings come after a month of investigations following the elephants’ untimely demise, raising urgent concerns about the intersection of wildlife conservation and agricultural practices.
Investigation Reveals Toxic Traces
The KWS conducted an analysis of samples taken from the carcasses of the elephants, which were discovered between 24 June and 24 July. Preliminary tests indicated the presence of cyanide, a highly toxic substance often employed in farming to control pests and predators. Erustus Kanga, the KWS Director-General, highlighted the lethal nature of cyanide, stating that elephants exposed to it are unlikely to survive beyond a couple of days.
The incidents occurred primarily in the Kimana sanctuary and Kuku Group ranch areas, which together encompass an expansive 392 square kilometres (approximately 96,865 acres) and host a population of over 1,600 elephants. This area, known for its rich biodiversity, is now facing the grave threat of chemical contamination from local tomato farms.

Kimana town is a notable hub for tomato production, and reports have previously emerged linking the use of cyanide in farming practices. Isaac Lekolool, who leads veterinary and capture services at KWS, noted that the stomach contents of one deceased elephant included a significant amount of tomatoes, providing strong evidence of agrochemical poisoning.
Kanga cautioned that the ramifications could extend beyond elephants to other livestock in the region, such as goats and cattle, which might also consume contaminated crops. Conservation Efforts at Risk
Benson Leyian, CEO of the Big Life Foundation, a conservation organisation operating in the Amboseli area, expressed grave concern over this unusual cluster of elephant fatalities. “Thanks to decades of community-centred conservation, the Amboseli elephant population is one of the best protected in Africa,” he remarked. Leyian underscored the rarity of such events in the region, particularly given the successful reduction of poaching incidents in recent years.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare echoed these sentiments, labelling the deaths as “deeply alarming” and emphasising the necessity for continued investment in scientific research and collaborative conservation initiatives. “Every elephant lost is significant – not only for the species but for the health of the ecosystems they help sustain,” the organisation stated.
