As Italy braces for an intense heatwave, nearly all major urban centres are being placed under the highest alert status, signalling a critical warning for the public. Health officials have announced that 19 cities, including prominent locations such as Rome, Milan, Venice, and Naples, are already experiencing a “red” alert, with the expectation that by Monday, only two cities will escape this classification.

The impending heatwave is expected to push temperatures into the mid-30s Celsius in many regions, prompting authorities to issue stern warnings. Health experts caution that even individuals who are typically healthy and active may face risks from the extreme heat, alongside vulnerable populations such as the elderly, infants, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
The Italian Ministry of Health’s latest bulletin, released on Saturday, indicates that by the start of the week, 25 of the nation’s 27 major cities will be on red alert status. The only exceptions will be Reggio Calabria and Messina, which will be under the slightly less severe “amber” alert. Residents are advised to limit exposure to high temperatures and direct sunlight, particularly during peak hours from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and to ensure adequate hydration.

The extreme temperatures are attributed to a strengthening subtropical anticyclone originating from North Africa, which has settled over the Mediterranean region. This climatic phenomenon is a key driver behind the rising temperatures and has contributed to a series of heatwaves affecting various parts of Europe.
In addition to Italy’s situation, several other European nations grapple with severe wildfires, exacerbated by the ongoing heat. Countries such as Greece, France, Spain, and Portugal are engaged in battle against fires that have ravaged vast areas, leading to extensive evacuations and emergency responses.

In France, the Var region has seen around 2,500 residents evacuated as a fire, previously under control, reignited on Friday. Fortunately, a large fire in the Gironde region has been brought under control, allowing approximately 200,000 evacuees to return home.
Greece has also faced significant challenges, with hundreds of individuals, primarily tourists, being evacuated by sea from a coastal town in Viotia, surrounded by wildfires. Meanwhile, Spain has experienced unprecedented land destruction, with over 200,000 hectares burned this year—approximately five times the average for this time period. Portugal’s figures are similarly alarming, with burned land also exceeding typical levels.
