The Department of Justice (DoJ) has initiated a federal civil rights investigation into the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse and activist, by immigration officers in Minneapolis on 24 January. During a press briefing on Friday, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed that the investigation aims to scrutinise the circumstances surrounding Pretti’s death. “We’re looking at everything that would shed light on that day,” Blanche stated, emphasising the comprehensive nature of the inquiry. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will spearhead this probe, as indicated by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Pretti was participating in protests against aggressive immigration raids when he was shot by officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal agencies.
