England and Wales are grappling with an unprecedented drought, following the driest July on record that has left nearly half of England and the entirety of Wales officially designated as affected areas. As provisional data from the Met Office reveals, July 2026 saw England receive a mere 6.5mm of rainfall, just 10 per cent of the average for the month, and significantly below the previous record low of 13.4mm set in 1911.

Alarming Rainfall Statistics

The data indicates that July 2026 is the third driest July in UK history, with total rainfall across the nation reaching only 28.9mm—the lowest since 1868. Dr Emily Carlisle from the Met Office remarked, “The headline story for July is undoubtedly the rainfall. Across parts of England and Wales, we’ve seen extraordinarily low totals, with some locations recording little or no meaningful rainfall for much of the month.” This alarming trend is compounded by the exceptionally high temperatures that have characterised the summer.

Approximately 28 million individuals reside in the drought-stricken zones of central, eastern, and southern England, while Wales’ population of just over 3 million brings the total to around 31 million. Key regions affected by the drought include East Anglia, Hertfordshire, London, Thames Valley, Hampshire, and parts of the West Midlands, among others.

Environmental and Economic Implications

The Environment Agency has labelled the current conditions as a “flash drought,” marking July 2026 as England’s driest month on record. This marks the second consecutive summer impacted by drought, despite the considerable winter rainfall that had replenished reservoirs and groundwater supplies. Helen Wakeham, the agency’s director of water, stated, “The hot and dry weather means we are currently using water faster than nature can replenish it. May and June had already witnessed record-breaking heatwaves, with the Met Office confirming a new June record of 38°C. Currently, nearly a third of England remains in a state of “prolonged dry status,” with only the North East experiencing conditions deemed normal for the season. Water Minister Emma Hardy commented on the urgent need for adaptation: “Our climate is changing, droughts are becoming increasingly common, and we need to be prepared for this new normal.”

The government is spearheading long-term changes within the water industry, including substantial investments in infrastructure, such as the construction of nine new reservoirs. Water companies are being urged to adhere to their drought management plans, prioritising leak reductions and ensuring consistent water supplies even during extreme weather conditions.
