Super El Niño Accelerates Climate Challenges Across Canada and Beyond

As wildfires rage and temperatures soar, Canada is grappling with the immediate impacts of a rapidly intensifying “super El Niño.” Predictions from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) suggest that this year could rank among the hottest on record. The combination of elevated global temperatures—exacerbated by El Niño—has already triggered conditions conducive to drought, heavy rainfall, and warmer winters, reflecting the escalating challenges posed by climate change across the globe.

El Niño’s Rapid Intensification

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has reported a significant coupling of atmospheric and oceanic circulation across the Pacific, heightening confidence that El Niño will persist through early 2027. The forecast indicates an 81 per cent likelihood of a “very strong” El Niño occurring from October to December this year, with the phenomenon expected to be among the largest recorded since 1950.

“It’s remarkable how quickly this El Niño is strengthening compared to past events,” said Global News meteorologist Anthony Farnell. “A lot of this can be attributed to climate change.”

June 2026 saw global average sea surface temperatures reach 20.86°C, surpassing previous records set in 2023 and 2024. An El Niño is officially declared when ocean temperatures in the tropical Pacific exceed 0.5 degrees Celsius above the long-term average; a “super El Niño” occurs when they rise over two degrees.

Wildfire Woes and Heat Domes

This year has already seen catastrophic wildfires across Canada, particularly in northern Ontario, where more than 7,250 square kilometres of forest have burned, eclipsing previous records. As of August 1, British Columbia is battling approximately 110 active wildfires, with 48 classified as out of control. While federal officials assert that the current wildfire season, though challenging, has not reached the scale seen in 2025, the situation remains dire.

Farnell noted, “El Niño has likely increased temperatures by one or two degrees, which can lead to drier forests due to greater evaporation.” Many regions in Canada recently experienced a “heat dome,” a meteorological phenomenon that traps heat and humidity, exacerbating the risk of wildfires.

“This situation may worsen as we move into fall with the ongoing strength of El Niño,” he added. With longer nights in autumn, increased humidity may present new challenges for forested areas.

The Hurricane Season Outlook

While the Atlantic hurricane season has officially commenced, activity has been subdued thus far, attributed to the developing El Niño. As of mid-July, only one tropical storm had formed, a stark contrast to typical expectations.

Farnell explained, “El Niño tends to weaken the Atlantic hurricane season. We’re not anticipating significant activity in the coming months, which also affects moisture patterns in Atlantic Canada and Europe.”

The dynamics of El Niño disrupt the conditions necessary for hurricane formation, particularly through enhanced wind shear, which hampers the development of tropical storms. However, the Pacific hurricane season is expected to be much more active, already reporting seven named storms, two of which have escalated to hurricanes.

Winter Predictions: Mild and Wet

As the peak of El Niño approaches in December, forecasts suggest that Canada will experience a warmer and wetter winter. Kent Moore, an atmospheric physics professor at the University of Toronto, anticipates less snowfall and more rainfall across the country, which could lead to significant implications for spring water supplies.

“Less snow means a diminished snowpack, which is critical for moisture retention until spring,” Moore stated. “This may heighten the risk of drought in provinces like British Columbia and Alberta.”

Moreover, as witnessed recently in St. Catharines, Ontario, cities may face increased flooding due to heavier rainfall patterns. “Warmer temperatures lead to more intense precipitation events,” Moore noted. “We could see more occurrences of freezing rain as temperatures hover around zero.”
