As wildfires rage and temperatures soar across Canada, the emergence of a “super El Niño” phenomenon is rapidly reshaping environmental forecasts. Experts anticipated this year would be one of the hottest on record, with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) projecting significant impacts from this climatic event. The confluence of El Niño’s effects and escalating global temperatures raises concerns about intensified droughts, heavy rainfall, and milder winters, which are already manifesting across multiple regions.

Unprecedented Heat and Wildfire Threats

With the ECCC’s predictions proving accurate, Canada is currently grappling with record-breaking wildfires. Reports indicate that northern Ontario has experienced a catastrophic wildfire season, with over 7,250 square kilometres of forest consumed—surpassing the previous record from 2021. As of early August, British Columbia is also in the midst of an alarming wildfire crisis, with more than 110 active fires, 48 of which are classified as out of control.

The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre reported a staggering total of 729 active wildfires nationwide, with 4,460 incidents recorded this year alone. Federal officials acknowledged the challenging nature of this season but noted that it has not reached the intensity seen in 2025. The Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June to November, has so far been relatively quiet, largely due to the onset of El Niño. As of mid-July, only one tropical storm had formed. Farnell explained that the phenomenon often reduces hurricane activity, as the wind patterns associated with El Niño disrupt the conditions needed for storm development.

This reduction in hurricane occurrences could have implications for moisture levels in Atlantic Canada and parts of Europe, where many storms typically transition into post-tropical systems. While the Atlantic remains calm, the Pacific hurricane season is anticipated to be very active, with several named storms already emerging. This contrast highlights differing regional impacts of the same climatic event.

Expectations for Fall and Winter

As the peak of El Niño approaches in December, forecasts suggest that Canada will experience a warmer and wetter fall and winter. Atmospheric physicist Kent Moore predicts reduced snowfall across the country, as warmer temperatures are likely to lead to increased rainfall. This shift in precipitation patterns raises concerns about the long-term implications for water supply and natural ecosystems, particularly if winter snowpacks are diminished.

Farnell echoed these sentiments, indicating that the combination of a drier winter and a lack of snowpack could heighten the risks of wildfires in the following year. Moreover, areas such as St. Catharines, Ontario, have already declared states of emergency in response to significant flooding, further underscoring the unpredictable weather patterns that El Niño could exacerbate.
