The tragic demise of 15 elephants near Amboseli National Park has cast a shadow over Kenya’s wildlife conservation efforts, igniting discussions about the potential role of harmful pesticides in agricultural practices. Investigations by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) suggest the elephants may have suffered from poisoning linked to cyanide-based pesticides applied to nearby tomato crops. However, the situation is far more complex than it appears, with local farmers and wildlife experts expressing scepticism and calling for a deeper analysis of the circumstances surrounding these deaths.

The Findings

On 5 August 2026, KWS reported that the elephants, which died between 24 June and 24 July, exhibited troubling signs of “partial paralysis,” indicative of cyanide exposure. Dr Isaac Lekolool, the chief veterinarian for KWS, confirmed that traces of cyanide were found in the animals’ stomachs. “We are not ruling out deliberate poisoning,” he noted, but emphasised the challenges in pinpointing the cause of death. “It’s difficult to tell because we’ve not seen these kinds of cases before. It was almost like a one-off event.”

The local ecosystem, a vital corridor connecting Amboseli and Tsavo National Parks, supports over 2,000 elephants who roam in search of sustenance and water. This region, nourished by streams from Mount Kilimanjaro, is crucial for both wildlife and agriculture, with farmers relying on these resources for their tomato crops.

The Agricultural Context

The tomato farms located in Kimana have been identified as a potential source of the lethal toxins. In a 2024 report by the Kenyan food safety initiative Route to Food, it was revealed that some farmers were using insecticides containing cyanide compounds, despite the substance being illegal in Kenya. Wangunyu Njuguna, author of the report, highlighted a significant gap in enforcement: “There’s no one checking what I go and buy across the border, so I can just go buy anything and walk through.”

The prevalence of highly hazardous agrochemicals in Kenya is alarming, as these substances have been linked to severe health issues among both humans and wildlife. While regulations exist, the enforcement is significantly lacking, leaving the door open for toxic materials to infiltrate local farming practices.

Questions Raised by Experts

Despite the evidence of cyanide, many wildlife conservationists question the conclusions drawn by KWS. Paula Kahumbu, a distinguished conservationist with nearly three decades of experience working with elephants, urged for more comprehensive investigation. “We haven’t got enough detailed information to have confidence in this claim that it’s due to pesticides in crops,” she asserted. “Those elephants have to eat a huge amount to kill them.”

Moreover, experts suggest that the behaviour of elephants does not align with the pesticide theory. Typically, adult males are more likely to raid farms, as they are known for taking risks. Yet, of the 15 elephants affected, only one was an adult male. Daniel Nina, a representative for local landowners, echoed this concern, pointing out that previous poisoning incidents had predominantly impacted zebras and antelopes. “How does cyanide kill the elephants and leave behind the zebras, antelopes, and wildebeests, which are eating the grass together?” he questioned.

The Bigger Picture

The deaths of these elephants are not just a matter of wildlife conservation; they highlight ongoing tensions between agricultural expansion and wildlife habitats. Stephen Michael, a local tomato farmer, shared his frustrations regarding human-wildlife conflict. “Elephants come from time to time from Tsavo and Amboseli. They destroy many farms, not just mine,” he lamented, revealing the economic impact of wildlife incursions.

Frank Pope, CEO of the conservation organisation Save the Elephants, emphasised the shifting pressures on Amboseli’s elephant population. “It’s not ivory anymore; it’s land use,” he explained. As agriculture and tourism developments encroach upon traditional elephant habitats, these conflicts are likely to escalate, further jeopardising both wildlife and local livelihoods.
