The recent deaths of 15 elephants in close proximity to Amboseli National Park have ignited significant alarm and speculation regarding potential pesticide exposure. The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) reported that the elephants, which perished between 24 June and 24 July, exhibited symptoms indicative of poisoning, including “partial paralysis,” potentially linked to cyanide found in certain pesticides. However, local farmers and conservationists are raising questions about the validity of these findings and the implications for wildlife in the region.
Unfolding Tragedy in Amboseli
The elephants were discovered dead in the Kimana area, part of a crucial migratory corridor connecting Amboseli National Park with Tsavo National Park to the south. This region, rich in biodiversity, supports over 2,000 elephants as they traverse the land in search of food and water. The tomato farms surrounding the park thrive due to the streams fed by Mount Kilimanjaro, supplying agricultural produce to markets in Nairobi and beyond.
Dr Isaac Lekolool, the chief veterinarian for KWS, confirmed that traces of cyanide were detected in the elephants’ stomach contents. While he noted that deliberate poisoning could not be ruled out, he emphasised that it remains challenging to ascertain the exact cause of death due to the unusual circumstances surrounding these cases. “It’s difficult to tell because we’ve not seen these kinds of cases before,” Lekolool said, pointing out the peculiar timing of the deaths.
Pesticide Use Under Scrutiny
A 2024 report by the Kenyan food safety initiative, Route to Food, identified a local farmer in Kimana using an insecticide containing a cyanide compound, which is illegal in Kenya. Wangunyu Njuguna, the report’s author, highlighted the alarming ease with which toxic agrochemicals can be smuggled across borders. “There’s no one checking what I go and buy across the border,” he explained, underscoring a significant gap in regulatory enforcement that permits hazardous substances to reach farms with little oversight.
The implications of widespread pesticide use are dire, not only for local wildlife but also for human health. With numerous studies linking these chemicals to severe health issues, farmers and conservationists alike are urging for more stringent regulations and monitoring.
Doubts Raised by Conservationists
Despite KWS’s preliminary findings, conservationists voice skepticism regarding the link between the elephants’ deaths and pesticide exposure. Paula Kahumbu, a notable conservationist with nearly three decades of experience working with elephants, remarked, “We haven’t got enough detailed information to have confidence in this claim that it’s due to pesticides in crops.” She highlighted the need for more comprehensive data to substantiate the initial conclusions.
Other experts, who chose to remain anonymous, echoed her concerns, noting that the behaviour of the elephants contradicts the pesticide theory. Notably, only one of the deceased elephants was an adult male, despite male elephants being the most likely to raid farms. Furthermore, previous reported cases of poisoning have primarily affected zebras and antelopes in the same areas, leading local representatives like Daniel Nina to question, “How does cyanide kill the elephants and leave behind the zebras, antelopes and wildebeests, which are eating the grass together?”
The Human-Wildlife Conflict
The tension between local communities and wildlife is a long-standing issue in Kenya, particularly in areas bordering conservation zones. Farmers like Stephen Michael have shared painful accounts of elephants raiding their crops, causing significant financial losses. “The last time elephants came, they destroyed cabbages and tomatoes. I lost cabbages worth almost $1,535,” said Michael, illustrating the economic pressures that exacerbate human-wildlife conflict.
Frank Pope, CEO of Save the Elephants, pointed out that the primary threat to Amboseli’s elephants is no longer poaching for ivory but rather the encroachment of agricultural land. “People are moving into areas where there’s enough water to grow crops, and fertile soils, and those are the very areas that the elephants tend to use as well,” he explained. This encroachment not only jeopardises the elephants but also places local communities at risk as they navigate the challenges of wildlife interaction.
