Calgary has taken significant steps to rejuvenate its iconic Stephen Avenue, a pedestrian thoroughfare that has been a central hub of community and commerce for nearly 150 years. With a fresh design featuring new trees, seating, lighting, and improved signage, the city aims to draw more visitors to this bustling downtown area. Mayor Jeromy Farkas underscored the importance of the project during the launch of the “See You on Stephen Avenue” campaign, which seeks to encourage dining and shopping in the revitalised space.
A New Chapter for Stephen Avenue
On Wednesday, city officials announced the launch of the “See You on Stephen Avenue” initiative, coinciding with the completion of various infrastructure upgrades. Mayor Farkas noted that these enhancements are not just about aesthetics; they signify a commitment to the future of Calgary, especially as the city prepares for a significant population increase. “This project represents the next hundred years… the foundations of that story,” he remarked, highlighting the avenue’s pivotal role in the city’s identity.
However, despite these improvements, parts of Stephen Avenue have struggled with low foot traffic, primarily due to concerns surrounding public safety and social disorder.
Addressing Safety Concerns
Local residents have expressed mixed feelings about the changes. Andrea Beauchamp, a Calgarian, revealed that safety issues have deterred many from visiting the area. “I think if they cleaned it up, obviously there are some issues here, it would bring more people here,” she stated. Similarly, Steve McCann acknowledged the recent beautification efforts but stressed the need for a more vibrant atmosphere. “It would be good to kind of revitalise the area… bring some life back to it,” he suggested.
Calgary Police Chief Katie McLellan has asserted that the city is actively addressing these safety concerns. “For a downtown to thrive, people need to feel safe,” she said, whilst detailing “Operation Restore,” an initiative launched in late June aimed at increasing police visibility and addressing crime hotspots along Stephen Avenue and the East Village. Since the operation’s inception, officers have responded to over 2,500 calls for service and connected vulnerable individuals with social support on numerous occasions.
A Collaborative Approach
The launch of the “See You on Stephen Avenue” campaign also coincided with the reopening of the Stephen Avenue Safety Hub. This facility will serve as a base for police and various support agencies, including Alpha House, to provide both enforcement and outreach services. McLellan noted that the redeployment of officers in specific downtown blocks has already shown promising results, as indicated by positive feedback from the community.
The city is not only focusing on enforcement but is also committed to offering assistance to those in need. This dual approach is crucial for fostering a safe and inviting atmosphere for both residents and visitors.
Looking Ahead
The revitalisation of Stephen Avenue is a pivotal step for Calgary as it seeks to balance urban development with community safety. The investments made today will not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area but also aim to restore public confidence in the downtown environment.
Why it Matters
The ongoing efforts to rejuvenate Stephen Avenue are emblematic of Calgary’s broader ambition to create a safe and vibrant urban space that can accommodate a growing population. By addressing both infrastructure and social challenges, the city is positioning itself to become a more attractive destination for locals and tourists alike. The success of this initiative could serve as a model for other cities grappling with similar issues, highlighting the importance of combining urban revitalisation with community support mechanisms.
