Calgary’s police chief, Katie McLellan, has assured the public that safety issues are being addressed through strategic initiatives. “For a downtown to thrive, people need to feel safe,” McLellan remarked. In June, the police launched “Operation Restore,” a high-visibility initiative focused on Stephen Avenue and the East Village, targeting areas identified as hotspots for crime and disorder.
Since its inception, the operation has made a noticeable impact, with over 2,500 calls for service and nearly 700 arrest warrants issued. Officers have also engaged with vulnerable individuals, connecting them with essential social support services on 829 occasions. “The feedback that I have received from several people has been positive,” McLellan noted, reflecting the early successes of the initiative.
In conjunction with the launch of the “See You on Stephen Avenue” campaign, the city has reopened the Stephen Avenue Safety Hub. This facility serves as a base for police and support agencies, like Alpha House, to collaborate on outreach efforts aimed at helping the community’s most vulnerable members.
