The city recently launched the “See You on Stephen Avenue” campaign, coinciding with infrastructure upgrades that include new trees, seating, lighting, and signage. Mayor Jeromy Farkas emphasised the importance of this historic pedestrian street, stating it has been a cornerstone of community and commerce for nearly 150 years.
A Vision for the Future
During a press event on Wednesday morning, Mayor Farkas highlighted the significance of Stephen Avenue as a key feature of downtown Calgary. “This project represents the next hundred years, and as our city grows to welcome two million people, three million people and more, we see the foundations of that story,” he remarked. The city’s ambition is clear: to create a vibrant environment that not only honours its past but also prepares for future growth.
Despite its prime location, Stephen Avenue has faced challenges with public safety and social disorder, resulting in decreased foot traffic in certain areas. Local resident Andrea Beauchamp voiced concerns about the perceptions of the area, noting that cleanliness and addressing social issues would be crucial to attracting more visitors. “If they cleaned it up, obviously there are some issues here, it would bring more people,” she said, reflecting the sentiments of many who view the area as needing rejuvenation.
Addressing Safety Concerns
The city’s efforts to revitalise Stephen Avenue go hand in hand with initiatives to enhance public safety. Calgary Police Chief Katie McLellan assured the community that safety concerns are being actively addressed. “For a downtown to thrive, people need to feel safe,” she stated, underscoring the importance of confidence among residents, workers, and visitors.
Launched on June 25, Operation Restore is a high-visibility initiative focusing on Stephen Avenue and the East Village—areas identified as hotspots for crime and disorder. Chief McLellan reported significant activity since the operation’s inception, with over 2,500 service calls, 471 business visits, and 75 charges laid. This proactive approach aims not only to enforce the law but also to connect vulnerable individuals with necessary support services.
The Role of the Safety Hub
The recent launch of the Stephen Avenue Safety Hub represents another stride towards improving the area. This dedicated base for police and support agencies such as Alpha House aims to address not only enforcement issues but also outreach to vulnerable populations in the vicinity. Chief McLellan noted that feedback from local businesses and residents has been encouraging, with reports of noticeable improvements in the area’s atmosphere.
As the city gears up for the Stampede, the revitalisation efforts are particularly timely. Local businessman Steve McCann expressed optimism about the changes, recognising the need for further community engagement and support to breathe life back into Stephen Avenue. “Resources to come down and help those people and then kind of revitalise it and bring more people down would be great,” he stated.
