A recent study highlights the significant role that managing certain health risk factors during middle age can play in extending the number of years individuals live free from dementia. Conducted by NYU Langone Health, the findings suggest that maintaining normal blood pressure, avoiding diabetes, and refraining from smoking can lead to nearly 13 additional years without the cognitive decline associated with dementia.

The research, published in the journal *Neurology*, evaluated over 12,000 individuals aged 55 who were initially free from dementia. Participants were monitored over an average span of 26 years to assess the impact of three critical risk factors: high blood pressure, diabetes, and smoking.
