A Journey of Persecution
Zhang, 55, is a long-standing practitioner of Falun Gong, a spiritual movement that has been subject to severe suppression in China. She fled to Thailand in 2014 to escape the regime’s persecution, which included arrests and torture. In 2016, she was granted refugee status by the United Nations Refugee Agency. However, her troubles escalated when she was elected to the dissident ‘Hong Kong Parliament’ last year, a body representing pro-democracy Hong Kongers in exile. This led to Chinese authorities placing a bounty of approximately $36,000 on her head for alleged subversion.
In a recent interview, Zhang expressed the gravity of her situation: “My story is an example of CCP persecution – of transnational repression. If we don’t draw international attention to it, it’s saying that the CCP can do whatever it wants.” Her words encapsulate the urgent need for global awareness about the plight of dissidents like herself.

Canadian embassy officials engaged with Zhang while she was detained, conducting medical examinations and biometric data collection, ultimately facilitating her flight to Canada on August 3. However, her journey nearly took a grim turn when her scheduled flight was abruptly cancelled on the orders of the Chinese embassy, a stark reminder of the far-reaching influence of Beijing’s policies on dissidents abroad.

Upon her arrival in Vancouver, Zhang was welcomed by members of the ‘Hong Kong Parliament’, who have pledged to continue advocating for her and other exiled activists. In her new home, Zhang hopes to connect with fellow Falun Gong practitioners and resume her activism. “I eventually was able to breathe the air of freedom,” she stated, expressing her gratitude for the support that enabled her escape.
